Hello
At my job we are running SQL Server 2008. My employer supplied the employees with laptops that allow us to access our PCs at the office via VPN. My laptop did not have SQL Server management studio and I'm not allowed to install any kind of software. Is there any solutions to have a way that can let me access my laptop or the DB Server: portable SSL, VNC or better kind of portable SQL Server Management studio?
Thank you.

Hi Abel,
If you are working as a DBA (who has responsibility to manage SQL Server Database of your organisation) then i think you have very valid & strong point for getting this thing done. Only thing is you need to pick right & convincing work so that Ice Melts ;) .

Hi,
One thing is sure if you want to access your SQL DB from your laptop then some or the other tool should be installed on the laptop be its SSMS or OSQL or SQLCMD etc. etc..
Second is once you are connected to your office using VPN try to RDP to the server and from there access SQL Server.
Else as I said you can ask your employer to install SSMS on your laptop.

Hello
Thank you for the quick reply. My boss is OK but his boss is not because he plans to change all laptops by the end of 2011 and will not call the IT support to unlock my PC (Re-Imaging the laptop).
So, if I understand, there's no way to have a portable SSMS?
Thank you
Abel

Hi Ahamdo,
So let me understand this. You are a database administrator. You do not have SSMS on your laptop which you need to connect remotely. Your boss is OK with it, but your bosses boss won't call I.T. to 'log in as admin and install SSMS'? WOW. Run. Run far far away fast. Your bosses boss sounds like a 80 year old scrooge who doesn't understand a damn thing.
Ok, if they want to make it difficult then you can ask for RDC rights into a computer with SSMS in their network. If they won't give you that, then you can ask 'so how do you expect me, or any DBA, to do their job, if you will deny them the most basic tool they need? It's like taking a carpenters hammer away, and you can't find a shoe to replace SSMS.'
Someone queue the Dilbert cartoon, sounds like the same office.
