My Microphone does not show up as recording device in remote desktop

Old Scenario:

Was incredibly happy with Win7 and sang praises to everyone who would listen on a particular feature of Win7 Remote Desktop.

When working at home on my work laptop.. (small formfactor 1200x800) I was using RDP from my Win7 ULT dekstop into the WIN7 ENT laptop…

Benefits were that I could now use my 30” screen *and* my 24” screen for full desktop usage.

Key benefit was the microphone redirection also as it allowed me to use my desktop surround speakers, and high quality microphone for corporate OCS voice calls locally and internationally.  (Great sound quality)

New Scenario:

My pre-release version of Win7 on my laptop expired, and I re-installed with release version of Win7 ENT

The multiple-screen benefits of Win7 still exist but the microphone redirection no longer works, (despite having the appropriate switch set in the RDP connection)

Microphone works for voice Windows Live calls on the desktop locally.

When RDP-ed to the laptop no “recording device” exists.  When I make OCS voice calls I can hear the other person but no microphone sound is passed through.

Would really appreciate any assistance on troubleshooting this.

Thanks,

Gavin

    Hi A G Williams,

Since you’re facing this issue after reinstalling Windows 7, audio redirection or bidirectional audio from terminal server to your laptop must be disabled. Contact your IT admin to check if redirecting audio to client terminal services RDP is enabled.

Also check in your laptop, whether you’re Remote desktop client is configured to support this feature.

    1.     Open Remote Desktop Client

    2.     Click on Remote Audio>settings>Microphone

    3.     Under Microphone, make sure “Record from this computer” is enabled.

Also check the following link below,

    Hope this information helped you!

I have the same problem as AG and I cannot use the work around provided by Casper because there is no 'fDisableAudioCapture' in that location.  When the original connection is made I make sure I choose 'Record from this Computer' under the Local Resources tab of the Remote Desktop Connection window.  On the remote computer the local audio driver is found as it shows up in the 'Sound Playback' and 'Voice Playback' lists of the 'Sounds and Audio Devices' properties.  Sound played on the remote computer does successfully play on the local computer's speakers.  However, nothing shows up in the 'Sound Recording' or 'Voice Recording' lists.

The local computer is running Windows 7 Professional.

The remote computer is running Windows XP SP 3.

I was thinking it might be an issue going from Win 7 to XP, however it seems like many others are also having problems going from 7 to 7.  This obviously should be working as there is the option to turn it on or off.  At this point I am thinking there is something wrong with the RDP that is not allowing the local recording hardware to be used on the remote computer, because as far as I can tell I have everything set correctly (yes the recording device successfully records on the local computer).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    For late thread readers:

Windows 7 Professional doesn't support Remote audio recording, like Home, Home Premium, etc. Only Ultimate and Enterprise supports this feature (as host). (Unfortunately it seems to be undocumented. Thanks MS!)

Of course Windows XP doesn't support Remote audio recording, too.

Windows Server 2008 R2 with Remote desktop role supports it. With RD for administration it seems to be unsupported (thanks MS!).

With RD client with ability to speak RDP 7.0 you can use this feature at local site, i.e. with Windows XP.

Has anyone every been able to get this working?

    My Scenario:

WIN7 computer using RDP(mstsc.exe) to connect to

Remote computer with XP, which has  external device connected to the microphone jack supplying audio.

The Win XP computer is running version 7 of the RDP software.

I can hear all the "Windows XP" sounds on my WIN 7 PC but can not hear the audio being supplied by the external device connected to the microphone jack.

I have verified all the RDP settings that i can find that have been listed on this site, and others.  On the remote computer there is no "recording device" listed.
