My Microphone does not show up as recording device in remote desktop

Old Scenario:

Was incredibly happy with Win7 and sang praises to everyone who would listen on a particular feature of Win7 Remote Desktop.

When working at home on my work laptop.. (small formfactor 1200x800) I was using RDP from my Win7 ULT dekstop into the WIN7 ENT laptop…

Benefits were that I could now use my 30” screen *and* my 24” screen for full desktop usage.

Key benefit was the microphone redirection also as it allowed me to use my desktop surround speakers, and high quality microphone for corporate OCS voice calls locally and internationally.  (Great sound quality)

New Scenario:

My pre-release version of Win7 on my laptop expired, and I re-installed with release version of Win7 ENT

The multiple-screen benefits of Win7 still exist but the microphone redirection no longer works, (despite having the appropriate switch set in the RDP connection)

Microphone works for voice Windows Live calls on the desktop locally.

When RDP-ed to the laptop no “recording device” exists.  When I make OCS voice calls I can hear the other person but no microphone sound is passed through.

Would really appreciate any assistance on troubleshooting this.

Thanks,

Gavin

    Hi A G Williams,

Since you’re facing this issue after reinstalling Windows 7, audio redirection or bidirectional audio from terminal server to your laptop must be disabled. Contact your IT admin to check if redirecting audio to client terminal services RDP is enabled.

Also check in your laptop, whether you’re Remote desktop client is configured to support this feature.

    1.     Open Remote Desktop Client

    2.     Click on Remote Audio>settings>Microphone

    3.     Under Microphone, make sure “Record from this computer” is enabled.

Also check the following link below,

    http://technet.microsoft.com/ja-jp/library/cc725887(WS.10).aspx Device and Resource Redirection

    Hope this information helped you!

I arrived here having the exact same problem - trying to use my local microphone over a remote desktop connection to use some voice recognition software.  I have followed all of these steps above, including the registry hacks, plus some additional items i've found elsewhere, but cannot get the microphone to show up as usable.  (No matter what I do, the  recording devices on the RDP side is showing up as "No audio devices are installed.  While it works/shows up fine on the local side) The only thing i can think of is that I may not have the needed version of Windows 7.  My arrangement is:

    • Local Machine: Windows 7 Home Premium
    • Remote Machine: Windows 7 Professional.

    Would that be the issue?

I'm looking into 3rd party software such as http://www.fabulatech.com/sound-over-rdp.html  which looks good but i'd rather avoid additional cost, and moreso, avoid installing any more devices/software/drivers that may bog my system down (especially over RDP)

    Thanks

Gosh i must be a dodo, but all this jargon is too much for me. I used to understand the computer and be able to fix most problems with the wizard but can no longer find that. cannot even find search in the start menu - is there someone who can tell me in laymans terms what i can do. your help will be much appreciated. my laptop tells me that there are no problems with my microphone or speakers but they still dont work for me.

Thanks for your help in advance
