Manage AI-enabled features (Frontier Preview)

Introduction

This article explains how to set up, validate, and manage AI-enabled features on your Cloud PC. To learn more about AI-enabled Cloud PCs, including minimum requirements that must be met before following instructions in this article, see AI-enabled Cloud PC (Frontier Preview) | Microsoft Learn.

Assign AI-enablement to Cloud PCs in Intune

Once users are registered with the Windows Insider Program, you can assign AI-enablement to Cloud PCs in Intune to get related features.

To assign AI-enablement to your Cloud PCs:

  1. In Intune, navigate to the Devices tab.
  2. Under Device onboarding, navigate to the Windows 365 page.
  3. Select the Settings tab.
  4. Select the Create button.
  5. Select the Cloud PC configurations option from the dropdown.
  6. Add a Name and Description (optional).
  7. On the Configuration settings tab, select Enable for the AI-enabled features setting.
  8. Follow on screen prompts until you reach the Assignments tab.
  9. Selects user groups to target. (Remember that their devices must meet all Cloud PC specifications.)
  10. Proceed to the Review + create tab and select Create
  11. Wait up to 48 hours for AI-enablement processes to finish on targeted Cloud PCs.
  12. On the Cloud PC, select Check for updates, install pending updates that appear, and restart your Cloud PC. Repeat this step (keep checking for and installing updates and performing a reboot if necessary) until there are no pending updates. You may need to repeat this process 3-5 times.

Windows Insider Program set up instructions for Cloud PCs

After being given AI-enablement entitlement, Cloud PCs must be enrolled in the Windows Insider Program and receive the latest Beta channel build (OS build 26120.6682 or later) to receive supported AI-enabled features. If you're setting up for an individual Cloud PC (instead of multiple at once), skip to this subsection

Important

You must register users with the Windows Insider Program so that supported AI-features work. If you're unable to follow the instructions in this section, see Managing preview builds across your organization - Windows Insider Program | Microsoft Learn.

Set up instructions for an individual Cloud PC (via Windows Updates)

If you want to set up an individual device into the Windows Insiders program, you can go through the Windows Updates Settings page within your Cloud PC instead of through Intune (described in the Intune section). To do single device Windows Insiders enrollment:

  1. On your Cloud PC, open the Settings app and navigate to the Windows Updates page.
  2. Select the Windows Insider Program section and select Get started
  3. Follow the prompts to sign in the user account associated with the Windows Insider Program.
  4. Enroll in the Beta channel to receive the latest Cloud PC AI-enabled features.
  5. Select Check for updates, install pending updates that appear, and restart your Cloud PC. Repeat this step (keep checking for and installing updates and performing a reboot) until there are no pending updates. You may need to repeat this process 3-5 times. For more details, see Managing preview builds across your organization - Windows Insider Program | Microsoft Learn

Important

If the Windows Insider Program selections above are not available, you can set a registry key to make them visible. This action will require admin user privileges.

Registry key instructions (requires admin privileges)

  1. Open the Registry Editor app.
  2. Navigate to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\UI\Visibility
  3. Create a new DWORD with name HideInsiderPage and value 0
  4. Restart the Cloud PC for the new registry key to take effect.

Validate AI-enabled Cloud PC status in Intune

After Cloud PCs are assigned the AI-enabled entitlement and enrolled in the Windows Insiders Beta channel, it can take up to 48 hours for related features to become usable since background processes must complete set up before features are available. After 48 hours, check for any additional Windows Updates and restart your Cloud PC (and repeat this until there are no pending updates). You'll likely need to repeat the checking for and applying updates process 3-5 times.

Afterwards, IT admins can check whether a Cloud PC is AI-enabled or not from the Essentials tab of the Intune Device page or see the overall tenant status from the Reports page.

There's an “AI-enabled” field on the Essentials tab of a device’s Overview page.

Validate AI-enabled Cloud PC status on Intune Reports page

The Windows 365 Cloud PC overview page under Reports now shows how many AI-enabled Cloud PCs are Initiated, Ready to use, or Failed.

  • Initiated: AI-enabled Cloud PC set up started for these devices.
  • Ready to use: AI-enabled Cloud PC set up completed and these features are ready to use.
  • Failed: AI-enabled Cloud PC set up for these devices couldn't be completed.

End user validation options

See AI-enabled Cloud PC (Frontier Preview) | Microsoft Learn for ways end users can validate that their Cloud PCs are AI-enabled.

Manage individual AI features in Intune

If you want to keep Cloud PC AI-enablement and only want to configure specific features, follow feature specific guidance:

Remove AI-enablement from Cloud PCs

There are two ways to disable Cloud PC AI-enablement in Intune.

  1. Unassign user from Enable policy
  2. Assign user to Disable policy

Either way will work by itself (without needing to perform the other option). However, the Disable policy takes precedence over the Enable policy during conflict resolution.

Steps to assign user to Disable policy

  1. In Intune, navigate to the Devices tab.
  2. Under Device onboarding, navigate to the Windows 365 page.
  3. Select the Settings tab.
  4. Select the Create button.
  5. Select the Cloud PC configurations option.
  6. Add a Name and Description (optional).
  7. On the Configuration settings tab, select Disable for the AI-enabled features setting.
  8. Follow on screen prompts until you reach the Assignments tab.
  9. Selects user groups to target.
  10. Proceed to the Review + create tab and select Create
  11. Wait up to 48 hours for AI-enablement to get disabled on targeted Cloud PCs.
