RPC error when I attempt to map network drive

Question

Thursday, December 1, 2016 1:10 AM

One of our existing users received a brand new Windows 7 machine that is joined to our domain. When I try to map a network drive I get the following error:

"\Servername\ is not accessible. You might not have permission to user this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The remote procedure call failed and did not execute."

This existing user has the appropriate permissions to that network drive and could access it just fine on her old workstation.

I get that same message when I use Windows Explorer log onto the workstation as domain administrator and to try to browse to the server by FQDN and by IP address.

I can ping the server by it's hostname and IP address. On the Windows 7 machine the RPC Endpoint Mapper service is running and set to auto. The RPC Locator service is Stopped and set to Manual. And the RPC service is Running and set to Auto.

I ran the following commands on the workstation:

arp -d *
nbtstat -R
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
Restarted her computer

And I applied this hotfix to the workstation - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2649905

Is there anything else I can try? Try to tweak the TCP offloading settings in the NIC?

Hi guys, thanks for your input. After some more digging I went to Local Group Policy > Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options > "Microsoft network client: Digitally sign communications (always)". I changed it from Enable to Disable, restarted her computer and that resolved the issue.

It should just work out-of-the-box without any hacks, tweaks, etc. Posting an unedited ipconfig /all or DC and problem machine might help.

Hi,

Thanks for your post.

Please also test setting the value of the restrictanonymous registry entry to 0 and check the results.
