Hello everyone.
We are running LTSB on our Kiosk/DS devices but are having issues of fitting Win10 on 32GB soldered eMMC storage which is what comes with our industrial-grade barebones units.
The install (pre-config) typically takes up about ~22GB of space out of the 28.51GB available
Updating the system entirely fills the device to the brim and halts further Windows update until more space is freed up.
We then using the following methods to compress the OS footprint:
- Compress OS ~2-3GB
- Disable hibernation file
- Reduce Virtual memory to 0
- Removed restore points
- Cleaned WinSxS using Dism
This typically results in us having a footprint of around 25GB after the final updates have been applied.
Our next move is to delete everything in the SoftwareDistribution folder, because this apparently is not something Windows Updates wan't to take care of itself, we are then on a OS footprint of roughly 21GB.
This is all before even applying a single piece of of our software to the system.
And then with the next security update the available space just keeps shrinking and shrinking until there is no more space and the system gets a space issue prompt which I can't remove either from the system.
Why do I need to do all this work to fit Win10E on a 32GB drive? I don't trust this to work for more than 6-12 months with security updates and with the anniversary update looming in the horizon (around summer '19, I especially can't trust this to work for very long).
All that and the Win10(x64) specifications still only recommends 20GB of available space for an install - what gives?
I really miss WES7 Embedded :(
Any advice is much appreciated
Frustrated but hopeful regards

Installation process consumes space during installation and eventually give some space back when install is completed. Windows 10 - you get everything whether you like it or not. You can disable some things i.e. Foundation package - disable Media Player, XPS print, etc.
Also, check to see if the installation files get place in the drive and remove them with a pass 7 sync command: c:\windows\configsetroot. Removing this can save some space.
Finally, run disk cleanup to remove files.

Hi,
We recommend using devices with 64GB soldered eMMC storage in the future when introducing new equipment.
From the current situation, according to the hardware of our devices and the space required for Windows 10 Enterprise update, all we can do is to delete and compress some files that can be deleted and compressed before each Windows update, thus windows can free up space for Windows update. Whenever Windows update is complete, we try to delete or compress some files that can be deleted and compressed, then windows will free up space for the next Windows update.
We try to contact the Script Center to see if there is such a batch file that regularly cleans up unnecessary data in the specified folder, thus freeing up enough space for each Windows update.
