    Dear tracey butler,

If Outlook only allows you to create events/appointments and you cannot send meeting invitations, it would be helpful to confirm a few details first.

    • Which type of account are you using in Outlook? (Microsoft 365 Business, Exchange, or Outlook.com)‌
    • Is it also happening in New Outlook and Outlook on the web? Can you create and send meeting invitations there? ‌For reference: Schedule a meeting or event in Outlook
    • When you open the Calendar, do you see New Meeting, or only New Appointment/Event?
    • If you create a meeting, is the To/Invite Attendees field available?
    • Are you able to send and receive regular emails successfully?
    • Does the issue occur with all calendars or only a specific calendar?‌
    • Have you recently changed your Microsoft 365 license, Outlook version, or account settings?
    • Are you receiving any error messages when attempting to invite attendees? Could you provide a screenshot of the error message so that I can better understand the issue (remember to remove any personal information before sharing).

In the meantime, here are a few things I recommend you check::

Step 1: Make sure you're using a mailbox account (Microsoft 365, Exchange, Outlook.com, etc.) and not just a local PST calendar. Meeting invitations require a mail-enabled account.

Check that you're creating a Meeting, not an Appointment > Open Calendar > Select New Meeting > Meeting (not New Appointment) > If you don't see New Meeting, this may indicate an account or profile issue.

Step 2: Verify Outlook is connected.

Check the Outlook status bar for Connected to Microsoft Exchange or Connected > If Outlook is offline or disconnected, meeting invitations cannot be sent.

Step 3: Create a new Outlook profile

Close Outlook > Open Control Panel > Mail > Show Profiles > Add > Configure your account and test again using the new profile. Or you can also refer to this article: Create a profile in classic Outlook for Windows

Step 4: Update and repair Office.

Go to File > Office Account > Update Options > Update Now.

If the issue persists, run an Online Repair from Control Panel > Programs and Features > Microsoft 365 > Change.

Step 5: Try Outlook on the web.

Sign in to Outlook on the web and create a meeting invitation there. If it works in Outlook on the web but not in the desktop app, the issue is likely with the local Outlook configuration.

If you have any questions or if I have misunderstood anything, please feel free to reach out. I'm looking forward to your update

If Outlook is only letting calendar items be created as events and not sent as meeting invites, start with these steps:

    1. Restart the PC. A restart has resolved this issue in a reported Outlook calendar case.
    2. If using new Outlook, reset the app.
      • Press the Windows key and search for Outlook.
      • Right-click it and select App Settings.
      • Scroll to Terminate and select it.
      • Then scroll to Reset and select Reset.
      • Reopen Outlook and test creating a calendar invite again.
    3. If the issue continues in new Outlook, repair or reinstall it.
      • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Outlook (new) > Advanced options > Repair.
      • If Repair does not help, use Reset from the same page.
      • If it still fails, uninstall Outlook (new) and reinstall it from the Microsoft Store.
    4. Check whether Outlook on the web can create and send the meeting request. If it works there, the issue is likely with the desktop app rather than the mailbox.
    5. If the goal is to move to the newer Outlook experience, use the Outlook app already installed in Windows and repair or reinstall it rather than looking for a separate upgrade link.
