I own 2 Azure subscriptions which have been inactive for several years. They've appeared in a finance report at work and I need to cancel, but cannot see them when I log in. How can I delete them? All I have are the subscription IDs

  1. In the Azure portal, check whether the subscriptions are in a different directory. If multiple tenants are associated with the account, use the profile menu in the top-right corner and switch directory, then search for Subscriptions again. This is a common reason subscriptions do not appear even when billing continues.
  2. If the subscriptions appear after switching directory, cancellation requires the Subscription Owner role. An account administrator without the subscription owner role can’t cancel the subscription.
  3. To cancel in the portal:
    1. Go to Cost Management + Billing.
    2. Select Subscriptions or Azure subscriptions.
    3. Select the subscription.
    4. Select Cancel.
    5. If resources are shown, select Cancel subscription, choose a reason, turn off resources if required, and confirm.
  4. After cancellation, billing stops immediately, although the portal can take up to 10 minutes to reflect the change.
  5. To permanently delete a canceled subscription in the portal:
    1. Open Subscriptions.
    2. Select the canceled subscription.
    3. Select Delete.
    4. If prompted, type the subscription name and confirm.
    5. The Delete option is available only after the waiting period: 3 days after cancellation for customer-led subscriptions, or 7 days for field and partner channel subscriptions.
    6. If Delete resources is not green, all remaining resources must be removed first. After deleting resources, allow about 10 minutes for status to update.
  6. If the subscriptions still do not appear anywhere and only the subscription IDs are available, create an Azure Billing and Subscription Management support request. This is the recommended path when the subscription exists but is not visible in the portal, or when access to the original account or directory is missing.
