The credit card on our Pay-As-You-Go subscription expired, and we now have an unpaid invoice. We are trying to update the payment method and pay the balance, but the Azure portal won't let us.

When we go to Cost Management + Billing to pay, the portal asks us to select a billing scope. After we select it, the page reloads to the same scope-selection screen and never reaches the invoice or payment page.

What we've tried:

  • Selecting the scope several times
  • Signing out and back in
  • Using a different browser and an InPrivate/Incognito window

    Hi Ben,

Please create a free billing support request so that a billing engineer can assist you. Please use link below to start the process:

    https://portal.azure.com/#create/Microsoft.Support

In the box, enter billing and click Go. Select Billing and click Next

    User's image

Select your subscription and click Next. There will be a brief delay, and then various suggestions for solving your issue will be displayed. Do not click on these. Look for a Create a support request at the top, if that is there click on it, if not, scroll down and look for a Yes, need more help button, click it, similar to below:

    User's image

Scroll back up to the top and click Create a support request button:

    User's image

Now you should be at the new support request screen. Fill out similar to below and click Next:

    User's image

There will be a brief delay, and then some solutions will be displayed. DO NOT CLICK on any of these, instead click on Return to support request

    User's image

This will take you back to the support request, click Next to go to Additional details tab. Fill out details, for Issue Category choose Azure- Billing issue, for Support plan choose Basic if you don't have paid plan, etc. Continue filling out, click Next, review information, click Create. You should receive an automated email with SR# and then be contacted by support hopefully within 1 business day.

    Thanks.

    -TP

Since your existing credit card has expired, have you tried adding a new credit card as a new payment method, instead of trying to update the existing card?

For a Pay-As-You-Go subscription, you can go to:

Cost Management + Billing → Payment methods → Add payment method

    User's image

Add your new/valid credit card and, if prompted, make it the default payment method.

You can then go to Invoices and use the new card to settle the outstanding balance.

Microsoft also documents that when settling a past-due PAYG balance, you can select an existing card or add a new payment method and then make the payment.

Microsoft documentation – Add, update, or delete a payment method

    Microsoft documentation – Resolve a past-due balance for a Pay-As-You-Go subscription

Please try adding a new payment method and see if you can complete the payment using the new card.
