My colleague can open a SharePoint file when I send them the direct link, but they can’t see the document library when they browse the SharePoint site. Any ideas?

    Dear @Caleb Jenkins

I understand the issue. If your colleague can open the file from a direct link but cannot see the document library when browsing the SharePoint site, the most likely cause is that they have permission to the specific file but not to the library itself.

    I recommend checking the following:

    1. Go to the affected document library > Settings > Library settings > Permissions for this document library. image
    2. Check whether the library has unique permissions or whether permission inheritance has been broken.
    3. Verify that your colleague (or a group they belong to) has at least Read permission on the library/site.
    4. Also check the file’s Manage access settings to see whether the user was shared the file directly.

If the file was shared directly, SharePoint can automatically grant Limited Access to the surrounding site/library so the user can open that specific file, without granting access to the rest of the library. Please refer to this document: Permission levels in SharePoint

If you want the user to browse the library normally, I would grant them appropriate permission at the library or site level, rather than only sharing the individual file.

This usually points to a permissions or link-specific access issue rather than a problem with the file itself.

    Try these checks:

    1. Verify library or site permissions
      • Confirm the colleague has permission to the SharePoint site and the document library, not just the individual file.
      • If the required permissions are missing, grant access to the site or file.
    2. If they get Access Denied or You need permission to access this site
      • Follow the SharePoint access-denied troubleshooting steps for that specific error.
    3. If the problem is only with a shared link
      • Remove the affected user from the site, then share the file or folder again.
    4. If the file or folder was renamed
      • In SharePoint Online, a sharing link should still work after rename.
      • But if an older direct link was previously sent, that direct link may no longer work after rename.
    5. If the folder or library appears unavailable or the user seems signed out
      • Open the link in an InPrivate/Incognito window.
      • Sign in with the same account that received the sharing invitation.
      • If needed, clear browser cache/cookies, then sign in again.
      • Ask the owner to confirm the folder or library was not moved, renamed, or deleted, and generate a new access link.

If the direct file link works but browsing the library does not, the most likely fix is to grant the colleague access at the site or library level instead of relying on the file link alone.
