Office documents from SharePoint always open in read-only mode

I can open Microsoft Word and Excel files from a SharePoint document library, but the files open as read-only. Other users can edit the same documents.

Although I have edit permission, the issue remains.

    Dear Ethan Carter,

Based on your description, kindly try these steps:

1> Remove and re-add the permission

Open the SharePoint document library > select the affected file > More Actions (...) > Manage access > More options (...) > Advanced settings

In the pop-up page, choose your account (affected user) > Remove User Permission

    User's image

Refresh the browser page, open the SharePoint document library > select the file again > More Actions (...) > Manage access > Start sharing > choose your account email address > elect Can edit.

2> Test the document in Office for the web

Open the document library in a private or InPrivate browser window.

Sign in with the your work account.

    Select the document.

Choose Open in browser or Open in Word/Excel/PowerPoint for the web.

    Make a small test change.

    Save the document.

Confirm that the change appears in SharePoint.

    3> Test another browser, device

Please try to open these files on an InPrivate or Incognito browser window, another computer.

I hope the information shared helps point you in the right direction.

Common causes for SharePoint or OneDrive files opening as read-only, even when edit permission exists, are:

    1. Use the file menu instead of selecting the file name.
      • In the document library, select Open Menu (the three dots) for the file.
      • Then select Edit.
      • This is a documented fix for files that open read-only from SharePoint.
    2. Check whether the library is configured to force read-only behavior.
      • Files can sync or open as read-only when the library has Checkout Required enabled.
      • The same can happen when the library uses Validation columns or metadata.
      • It can also happen when Draft Item Security in Version Settings is set to Only users who can edit or Only users who can approve items.
    3. Check whether Office is in reduced functionality mode.
      • If Office is not activated, or the subscription has expired, Office apps can open files as read-only.
    4. Check the file’s Windows attribute.
      • Right-click the file.
      • Select Properties.
      • If Read-only is checked, clear it and select OK.
    5. Check whether antivirus is forcing read-only.
      • Some antivirus products open potentially unsafe files as read-only.
      • Review the antivirus settings for file protection behavior.
    6. Check whether the document is opening in Protected View.
      • Office documents can open in Protected View, which prevents editing even when permissions are correct.
    7. Try the standard Office recovery steps.
      • Restart the computer.
      • Check that all Office updates are installed.
      • Perform an Online Repair of Office.

If the files are in a library that requires checkout, another symptom is that documents opened from links may stay read-only until the file is checked out.
