My version of Office Professional Plus was working until yesterday and now on opening Word/Excel/Outlook it asks me to Activate the program even though in Settings/Activation my computer shows that it is still activated. I have used this program for a number of years

Windows activation and Office activation are separate.

Has something changed on your computer recently, for example upgraded hardware components? Office may need reactivation after those types of upgrades.

If you look at File > Account, is the 365 Basic version the only product shown, or do you also see your expired Office 2019?

How was Office originally purchased? Is this a volume license purchased for an organization (business) or did you perhaps get Office via the HUP (Home Use Program)? If the latter, go to the order history page at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/workplace-discount-program/order-history?msockid=16f825d26fb0601c2ee232a46e41616e .

    Hello @Ewen,

Good day! I hope you are doing well.

To help provide the most accurate and effective solution, could you please share a bit more information about your setup?

    • What is the exact version of Office Professional Plus you are using (e.g., 2013, 2016, 2019, 2021)?
    • As this question is posted under the Business category, could you please confirm whether your Office license is provided by a work or school organization, or if it is a personal license that you purchased yourself?
    • Could you also confirm whether this is your personal device or a device that was provided and managed by your organization?
    • What activation message or error code do you see when opening Word, Excel, or Outlook? Could you please provide the exact error message or a screenshot of the prompt (with any personal information removed or obscured)?
    • If you open Word > File > Account, what is shown under the Product Information section?
    • Have there been any recent changes to your device, such as Windows updates, Office updates, hardware changes, or profile/account changes before the issue started?

This additional context will help us better understand your environment and identify the most appropriate troubleshooting steps.

In the meantime, you may try the following:

    • Open an Office application and verify that you are signed in with the account that was originally used to activate Office. If multiple accounts are signed in, please sign out of all accounts, close all Office applications, then reopen an Office app and sign in using only the account associated with the Office license.
    • Check for multiple Office installations under Control Panel > Programs and Features and uninstall any older or unused versions.

    • Ensure your Windows date, time, and time zone settings are correct.
      • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
      • Navigate to Time & Language > Date & Time.
      • Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically (if available)

      • If your time zone is not detected correctly, select the appropriate time zone manually.
      • Click Sync now under Additional settings to synchronize your device's clock.

    • Restart your computer and try opening an Office application again.
    • If available, run Office as an administrator and check whether the activation prompt persists.

I look forward to your response so we can work with you to get this issue resolved as quickly as possible.

    Kind regards,
