SharePoint Online PDF Documents Open in Same Tab on Some Sites and New Tab on Others

We are investigating PDF document behavior within multiple SharePoint Online document libraries.

Within our tenant, we have identified different behavior across sites:

  • On some SharePoint sites, selecting a PDF from a document library opens the PDF in a new browser tab/window.
  • On other sites, selecting a PDF from a document library opens the PDF within the current SharePoint tab/page.

We are specifically attempting to determine whether there is a supported SharePoint configuration that controls this behavior and, if so, how to configure it consistently across sites.

Troubleshooting Completed:

  • Compared document library settings between multiple affected and working sites.
  • Reviewed Library Settings and Advanced Settings.
  • Compared:
    • Opening Documents in the Browser settings
      • Content Type management settings
        • Document library configurations
          • Modern SharePoint document library experiences
          • Confirmed that the "Opening Documents in the Browser" setting affects Office documents but does not appear to impact PDF behavior.
          • Tested with multiple users and browsers.
          • Verified that the issue is not isolated to a specific user profile.
          • Identified multiple sites that consistently open PDFs in separate tabs and multiple sites that consistently open PDFs in the current tab.
          • No obvious configuration differences have been identified between the libraries.

Questions:

Is there a supported SharePoint Online setting that controls whether PDFs open in the current tab versus a new browser tab when selected from a document library?

Are there known library, site collection, content type, classic/modern experience, or tenant-level settings that could cause this behavior to differ between sites?

Is the behavior determined by SharePoint configuration, browser handling, or Microsoft service-side functionality?

Is there a supported method to force PDFs opened from a SharePoint document library to always open in a separate browser tab?

    Hi Carlos,

Based on the information I've been able to review, I'm not aware of any documented document library, content type, site collection, or tenant-level setting that administrators can configure to consistently control whether PDF files open in the current tab or a separate tab across all SharePoint Online sites.

Similarly, I haven't been able to find any official Microsoft documentation that identifies a specific setting, or a distinction between modern and classic document libraries, that directly governs PDF opening behavior. While some users may observe differences in how PDFs open between classic and modern SharePoint experiences, it is not clear that these differences are the result of a supported or configurable setting.

At this time, it appears that there may not be a documented or supported method for administrators to enforce a consistent same-tab or new-tab PDF opening experience across all SharePoint Online sites. However, if you've encountered behavior that differs between sites, it may be worth comparing their configurations further to determine whether another factor could be influencing the experience.

For deeper troubleshooting, it may be helpful to contact your Microsoft support team through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center with an admin account and provide:

    • URLs for both a site where PDFs open in a new tab and a site where they open in the current tab
    • Screenshots demonstrating the different behaviors
    • Confirmation that the behavior has been tested across multiple user accounts and browsers

This information can help the support team compare the affected sites, identify any underlying differences, and determine whether the behavior is related to a service-side configuration or an expected product behavior.
