The supported recovery path is the standard Microsoft account recovery process.

    1. Start with the Sign-in Helper tool. It is the first recommended step for most sign-in problems and can identify what recovery option applies.
    2. If the child account does not use two-step verification and the listed verification email or phone options are not recognized, use the Sign-in Helper tool again to continue recovery guidance.
    3. If using the Microsoft account recovery form, use a device previously used to sign in to that account and complete it from a location commonly used for that device, such as home.
    4. Provide as much detail as possible in the form:
      • old passwords that may have been used
      • exact Outlook.com or Hotmail.com email subject lines
      • contacts the account emailed
      • Skype details, if used
      • Xbox console hardware ID, if the account was used on Xbox
    5. A working email address is required for the recovery form. Recovery results are sent to that address within 24 hours.
    6. If no result arrives, check that working email account and then submit the form again if needed. Microsoft allows retrying the recovery form up to two times per day.

    Important limits:

    • If two-step verification was turned on and there is no access to any alternate verification method, support agents cannot reset the password or change account details.
    • Family Safety membership does not provide a separate password reset path in the provided guidance.
    • If the account has very little activity, recovery can be harder because the form depends on account-specific history.

If the password is simply forgotten and a verification option is still accessible, use Forgot password? on the sign-in page, choose a verification method, get the code, and reset the password directly.
