Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
This usually means the Mac apps are not recognizing the active subscription or the installed Office build does not match how the subscription was purchased.
Try this in order:
- Verify the subscription is active
- Close all Office apps.
- Go to Services & subscriptions: https://account.microsoft.com/services
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that was used to buy Microsoft 365 Personal.
- Confirm the subscription is listed as active.
- Check payment status
- Go to Payment options: https://account.microsoft.com/billing/payments
- If the payment method shows an error, update it.
- A payment problem can cause the subscription to become expired or suspended and trigger the Account Notice or reduced functionality behavior.
- Sign in with the correct account in Office
- In Word or Excel on the Mac, check which Microsoft account is signed in.
- If a different personal, work, or school account is signed in, sign out and sign back in with the same Microsoft account that owns the Microsoft 365 Personal subscription.
- If the subscription was bought through Apple, verify the Apple subscription
- If the purchase was made in the Mac App Store or through Apple billing, verify on the Apple subscriptions page that the Microsoft 365 subscription is active.
- If it is active, use the Restore previous purchase for Office for Mac steps.
- Reinstall from the correct source if needed
- If the subscription was purchased from Microsoft, install Office from the Microsoft account services page.
- If the subscription was purchased through Apple, install from the App Store.
- Using the wrong install source can prevent the license from being detected correctly.
- If the problem started after renewal or purchase, check whether activation is still incomplete
- If a physical box or retail card was purchased, the subscription does not start until the product key is redeemed.
- Check the renewal status online before contacting support.
- If Office still opens but cannot edit or save
- This is reduced functionality mode. Microsoft 365 apps can enter this mode if they do not connect to the internet for at least 39 days.
- Reconnect the Mac to the internet and sign in to Microsoft 365 again.
- If none of the above fixes it
- For Microsoft 365 Personal, contact Microsoft Support.
- As a temporary workaround, Office for the web can be used at Office.com.
- Office error "Account Notice: We've run into a problem with your Microsoft 365 subscription"
