Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
If the old Microsoft account was closed, it can only be reopened during the 30-day or 60-day grace period. To try that, sign in at https://account.microsoft.com. If prompted, enter the security code to reopen it.
If the old account has been deleted, it cannot be reopened. This includes these cases:
- the grace period after closing has already passed
- the account was inactive for more than two years
Because the email now works for a newly created Microsoft account, that strongly suggests the old account is no longer available as an active Microsoft account.
What to do next:
- Go to the Microsoft account sign-in page and enter the old email.
- If it says “We couldn't find an account with that username” or “That Microsoft account doesn't exist,” the old account is not currently recognized as a Microsoft account.
- Double-check the spelling and domain of the email address.
- Use the Sign-in Helper tool for account checks and recovery guidance.
- If the account was only closed recently, try signing in at account.microsoft.com to see whether it can still be reopened.
If the account is not recognized and the reopen window has passed, the old account cannot be recovered.
