Hotmail account cannot be added to Outlook for Android on any device, other accounts work normally

I have a personal Hotmail account that works normally in Outlook.com, Outlook for Windows, and Samsung Email. Other Hotmail accounts work normally in Outlook for Android.

This particular Hotmail account cannot be added to Outlook Mobile. I have tested it on two completely different Android devices — my Samsung phone and a separate Android tablet — with exactly the same result.

After entering the email address, Outlook attempts authentication for some time, does not display a password prompt or any error message, and then returns to the Add Account screen.

I have already changed the Microsoft account password, removed the account from Outlook, Samsung Accounts and Microsoft Authenticator, cleared Outlook's data, restarted the devices, and performed a fresh Outlook setup. Microsoft's Sign-in Helper confirms that the account is healthy.

Symptoms:

  • Enter email address.
  • Outlook begins authentication.
  • No password prompt appears.
  • No error message is displayed.
  • Outlook returns to the Add Account screen.

Troubleshooting already completed:

  • Password changed.
  • Account removed from Outlook.
  • Account removed from Microsoft Authenticator.
  • Account removed from device accounts.
  • Outlook app data and cache cleared.
  • Outlook reinstalled.
  • Devices restarted.
  • Fresh Outlook setup on multiple Android devices.

Welcome Lenny Fridman,

Thank you for providing the detailed troubleshooting history. Since the account works normally in Outlook.com, Outlook for Windows, and Samsung Email, and the same behavior occurs on multiple Android devices, let's check a few account-specific settings that may affect the Outlook Mobile sign-in flow.

Could you please confirm:

  • Is this Hotmail account using password-only sign-in, or have you enabled two-step verification on the Microsoft account?
  • Can you successfully sign in to the account from an Android browser using an InPrivate/Incognito window at https://outlook.live.com?
  • Under Microsoft Account > Security > Advanced security options, do you see any unusual sign-in restrictions, security alerts, or recent security changes on the account?

As a quick test, please also try:

  • Open a browser on the Android device and sign in to the Hotmail account at https://outlook.live.com.
  • Leave the browser signed in.
  • Open Outlook for Android and try adding the account again.
