I have recently received several Microsoft Authenticator requests to sign in that I did not instigate. Is this a security issue or something else?

Yes. Unrequested Microsoft Authenticator sign-in prompts usually mean one of these:

    1. Someone is trying to access the account.
    2. Someone entered the wrong phone number or email by mistake.
    3. A previously requested prompt was delayed.

The correct action is to deny any prompt that was not initiated. Without the correct approval or code, the account remains protected.

To check whether there is a real security issue:

    1. Open the Microsoft account Security basics page.
    2. Select Review activity and inspect recent sign-in attempts.
    3. If any activity is not recognized, select This wasn't me or Secure your account.
    4. Change the password if there is concern that someone may have accessed the account.

If the repeated prompts are for a work or school account, repeated sign-in attempts can also trigger Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication protections. In that case, waiting and trying another MFA method can help, and an IT administrator can review Microsoft Entra sign-in logs.

For additional protection, going passwordless can help reduce unwanted verification prompts.
