I've used only 4% of my cloud storage but am getting error flags when saving pictures. What's the problem?

    Hi, @Cathy Dent

If you haven't tried anything yet:

First, sign in to https://onedrive.live.com and check whether you can upload a picture there normally.

If the issue still persists, to help narrow down the issue:

    1. What is the exact error message or error flag you see?
    2. Where are you saving the pictures: OneDrive in File Explorer, the Photos app, or another program?
    3. Does OneDrive in the taskbar show any sync error or warning?

If possible, share a screenshot of the error, but hide any personal information.

Click "Add comment" to let me know.

    Thanks!

The most likely problem is that the error is not about local PC space, but about OneDrive or Microsoft cloud storage state, account sign-in state, or camera upload behavior.

    Common causes supported here:

    1. Microsoft storage quota is being treated as exceeded If Microsoft storage is full, OneDrive cannot upload, edit, or sync new files such as pictures or Camera Roll, even though existing files remain available.
    2. OneDrive may not be signed in correctly or may need to refresh account status A known cause of incorrect “out of storage” warnings is OneDrive not properly syncing with the Microsoft 365 subscription, being signed in with a different account, or not refreshing storage information.
    3. Camera upload can fail even when storage looks low-used For picture-saving or camera upload issues, turning camera upload off, renaming the Camera Roll folder on the OneDrive website, then turning camera upload back on can restart the upload process.
    4. If saving from Windows Camera app, the save location may be the issue In Windows, pictures and videos may fail to save if the current save location is wrong or unavailable. Check Start > Settings > System > Storage. In Windows 11, go to Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved. Under New photos and videos will save to, switch to another location, select Apply, then switch back and select Apply again.
    5. For iPhone photos, iCloud optimization can block upload OneDrive cannot upload photos optimized for iCloud. On iPhone, go to Settings > iCloud > Photos and clear Optimize Storage.

    Practical steps:

    1. Check storage usage and quota in the Microsoft storage section of the account dashboard.
    2. Confirm the Microsoft 365 subscription is active.
    3. Make sure OneDrive is signed in with the same Microsoft account that owns the subscription.
    4. Sign out of OneDrive and sign back in to refresh storage status.
    5. If the issue is with picture or camera upload, turn off camera upload, rename the Camera Roll folder on the OneDrive website, then turn camera upload back on.
    6. If the error happens in the Windows Camera app, check and reset the save location for new photos and videos.

If the account is actually over quota, OneDrive will block new picture uploads even if only a small amount appears used in one place, because Microsoft storage can include OneDrive files and photos, Outlook.com pictures and attachments, and other files stored with the personal account.
