Why is the Microsoft billing system not user friendly

My account is at risk of being cancelled. I added my U.S. card, but the system will not allow me to remove my BSD card, even though that card has been destroyed and is no longer valid.

Customers should be able to add, remove, and select their preferred payment method at any time—whether it is a U.S., BSD, euro, or other international card. An expired, destroyed, or inactive card should not be permanently locked to an account.

Please resolve this urgently, remove the old BSD card, and set my U.S. card as the preferred payment method so my account is not cancelled. This situation is extremely frustrating and should not be happening.

The key issue here is likely the subscription’s billing region, not simply that the old card is expired.

Microsoft does allow an expired payment method to be removed. However, if that card is still tied to an active subscription, you generally need to add a new payment method and switch the subscription to it before the old card can be removed.

As for the U.S. card, Microsoft states that payment methods are country/region specific. To use a payment method from another country, the Microsoft account country/region usually needs to match. Existing Microsoft 365 subscriptions from another region can also prevent that change.

From what you described, it sounds like your current subscription may have originally been purchased in a different country. Is that correct?

If so, you would need to let the current subscription expire first, then change the Microsoft account country/region to the U.S. and purchase the subscription again using the U.S. card. As long as you use the same Microsoft account, your data will remain intact, although I would avoid leaving the account without a subscription for an extended period (weeks or months).

Microsoft explains the country/region restriction here:
