Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
If Excel opens but does not allow typing, the most likely causes in this scenario are activation/view-only mode, the workbook opening read-only, or a basic input issue.
Try these checks in order:
- Check whether Excel is activated
- In Excel, go to File > Account.
- If the product shows as not activated, unlicensed, or expired, Excel can open files in view-only mode and block editing.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used to purchase Microsoft 365.
- Confirm the file is not opening read-only
- If only one workbook is affected, test with a new blank workbook.
- If a new workbook allows typing, the original file may be opening read-only.
- Read-only mode can prevent editing.
- Test whether the issue affects all workbooks
- Create a new Excel workbook.
- Try entering data and saving it.
- If the problem happens only in one file, the issue is with that file rather than Excel itself.
- Try editing the cell directly
- Double-click a cell, or select a cell and press F2.
- Then try typing.
- Check whether Scroll Lock is on
- Press Win + Ctrl + O to open the On-Screen Keyboard.
- Make sure ScrLk is not enabled.
- Update Office
- In Excel, go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
- Repair Office if Excel still will not accept input
- If Excel is activated and the problem affects all workbooks, try an Online Repair of Office.
- This is also the recommended step when Excel opens incorrectly, such as to a blank screen.
If the workbook specifically shows as read-only, that is a separate file state from worksheet protection.
- Why did my file open read-only?
- Can't enter data in Excel - Microsoft Q&A I have checked to make sure the worksheet and all cells are NOT PROTECTED but I still can't enter data into the cells. WTF?
- Excel no longer allowing data entry, is view only - Microsoft Q&A Has anyone lost the ability to enter data into an Excel file? I'm trying to update a file on our home computer and it does not allow data entry. It is in view only mode. Have been using this file for years. System says the license needs updating but won't allow me to do it.
- Excel opens to a blank screen
- open xlsx files in Microsoft 365 Personal - Microsoft Q&A I subscribed to Microsoft 365 Personal but now I am unable to open previously created excel files
