Fix bounce backs from the email on my Teams account

I signed up to an MS account with my normal gmail address, and I use that to log in. But when I send Teams invitations, people who reply get a bounceback because the Teams invite is coming from an automatically generated @outlook.com email address that I never chose or access. When I go into outlook online, I am unable to edit this address. Nor can I edit it anywhere in the main Microsoft 365 profile, where my desired email address is the only one listed under aliases. How can I get rid of the outlook email address and make sure invitations are sent from my desired email address?

Microsoft cannot send email invitations from a non-Microsoft email address (e.g. Gmail). Therefore, invitations are sent from a generic outlook.com address to which receivers cannot respond.

A recommended workaround is to create a new Microsoft email address and set this address as the primary alias for your Microsoft 365 account.
