How to Reset a Desktop.

I recently inherited a desktop with windows 11 from my late Aunt. I do not have her passwords or any ways to access her account and need to reset the computer to factory so that I can use it. I have tried doing the method where I hold shift when I restart, which brings me to a page where I can troubleshoot. I click troubleshoot to reset this PC, then I click remove everything. THIS HERE is where I get stuck because I need a recovery key that I do not have nor can I get access to. What do I do from here?

If you need to salvage data from it you can boot from a rescue disk such as the latest version of Hiren's Boot CD ported to a flash drive and salvage the data to another external drive. If the login was with a local account there are programs you can use at this stage to clear the login; however, if it is set to login using the Microsoft account, you will need to wipe the drive and reinstall from a Windows 11 USB (downloading Windows 11 version that came pre installed on the machine and the key from the sticker on the bottom of machine) or if it has a recovery partion, booting into recovery and installing.

If you don't have your late Aunt's log in credential, I am afraid your only option is a clean install.

To perform a clean installation of Windows 11 using the Windows Media Creation Tool. You do need to get access to another computer so you can download the Windows installation files into a flash drive, then use the flash drive to help your computer. Hopefully you have a spare computer, or you can have friend or family help you.

The following steps should be done on a working Windows computer:

Download the Windows Media Creation Tool from Microsoft's official website. https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11 click on the "download now" button under "Create Windows 11 Installation Media"

Run the tool and select "Create installation media for another PC."

Choose "USB flash drive" as the media to use for the installation and select "Next."

Connect a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of free space to your computer.

Select the USB flash drive you want to use, and then select "Next."

The tool will then download the required files and create the installation media.

Now these steps will be done on your problematic computer:

Go to the computer's BIOS boot menu to have it boot from the USB drive.

Follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows 11, making sure to choose "Custom install" and select the option to delete all existing partitions.

Once the installation is complete, you'll have a clean installation of Windows 11 on your computer.

Whenever anyone receives a previously used computer, the first thing to do is to erase the hard drive and reinstall all the software. That's the only way to be 100% certain that the computer is free of configuration mistakes and malware - and you want to be 100% certain - and it's the only way to ensure that the computer is setup the way you like it to be.

CAVEAT: If BitLocker was enabled on your Aunt's computer, and you don't have the recovery key, you might not be able to do this. If the computer was used in an organization, BitLocker might have been implemented in a way that makes it impossible to erase the hard drive.

There are two ways to erase the hard drive and reinstall all the software: the easy way and the hard way. I'm lazy as all get out, so I like the easy way.

EASY WAY: Computers from the big name manufacturers (Lenovo, Dell, HP, etc.) are delivered with a special hard drive partition that contains all the software that was installed at the factory. With a few keystrokes, you can replace what's on the hard drive now with the software that was installed at the factory. It's what you get when you press the Power button for the first time on a new computer.

The hard way takes longer, but in return you have more control over the outcome.

HARD WAY: You'll use Microsoft's own Media Creation Tool to create a generic Windows 11 installer on a USB flash drive. Boot the computer from the flash driver and Windows will commence installing.

It's completely up to you which way to go. Instructions for the Easy Way are on the computer manufacturer's own website. The procedure is so quick that I could summarize it right here, except that individual manufacturers might have slightly different procedures. Instructions for the Hard Way are much too lengthy to completely describe in a community forum post. Essential instructions are on Microsoft's website, but the internet has more details and some good advice, too. (Like: Don't do what I did.)
