Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Hi @CAMILLA PEROTTI,
The error code 657rx, together with the message “The credential is invalid. Unexpected substatus (6008)”, usually points to a local authentication problem. In most cases, this is caused by corrupted or outdated cached credentials or tokens related to your Microsoft 365 work account on the device.
Before suggesting anything further, could you help clarify a couple of points?
- What were you doing when the error appeared? Were you opening a specific Office application, signing in to Microsoft 365, activating Office, or something else?
- Are you able to sign in and use Microsoft 365 services through a web browser?
In the meantime, I'd recommend trying the following steps:
First, make sure all Microsoft Office applications are completely closed. Then press Win + R, enter the following path, and press Enter.
%localappdata%\Packages\Microsoft.AAD.BrokerPlugin_cw5n1h2txyewy
When the folder opens, delete all of its contents while keeping the folder itself intact. This will reset the locally stored Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) authentication tokens.
After that, open Control Panel > User Accounts > Credential Manager > Windows Credentials and remove any entries related to MicrosoftOffice16 or your work account. This helps eliminate any cached credentials that may be causing authentication conflicts.
Once completed, restart your computer. After the restart, go to Settings > Accounts > Access work or school and review the account connection.
If your business account is not listed, select Connect and sign in with your work account. If the account is already listed, select it, choose Disconnect, and then reconnect it using the same credentials.
I hope the information above helps you move forward. If you're able to try the suggested steps, please let me know how it goes.
If there's anything else you'd like to share about your situation, feel free to reply here and I'll be happy to help further if I can.
Thank you for taking the time to read my response!
