Plugged a removable external drive to school Pc now it’s encrypted and there’s no code to unlock it.

This had never happened before and Ibhave never encrypted this device. Help, please.

Please don't format, initialize, erase, or repartition the external drive, as that could make recovery of your files more difficult.

From your description, the first thing to establish is whether the drive was encrypted with BitLocker To Go. Windows uses BitLocker To Go for removable devices such as USB flash drives and external hard drives.

When you connect the drive to your own Windows PC, what exactly does the unlock message say? If it asks for a BitLocker recovery key, please note the Recovery Key ID shown on the prompt. Don't post the actual 48-digit recovery key publicly.

Since this happened after you connected the drive to a school PC, contact the school's IT department. Managed Windows computers can have policies requiring BitLocker protection on removable drives, and recovery information can be stored in the organization's Microsoft Entra ID or Active Directory environment.

Also check whether a recovery key was saved to an account you used on that computer:

For a personal Microsoft account, check Microsoft's BitLocker recovery-key page.
If you signed into the school PC using a school account, check the work/school account recovery-key page or ask the school's IT administrator to search for the key using the Recovery Key ID.

Microsoft cannot retrieve, provide, or recreate a lost BitLocker recovery key. If the drive is BitLocker-encrypted, Microsoft doesn't have a master key that can bypass the encryption.

EmilyS_726 – I've followed your suggestion and signed into https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey using my school account, but unfortunately no devices are showing there, so I'm stuck at that point.

@Allan Solomon Mejia + @Anonymous – to confirm, the drive is indeed asking for a 48-digit BitLocker recovery key, and I've not been able to locate the Recovery Key ID from the prompt as there are no visible devices . I've already contacted my school's IT department, but they've said they cannot support this issue, which is concerning.

Regarding your point about recovery keys being stored in the organisation's Microsoft Entra ID or Active Directory environment – could you please elaborate on where exactly within those environments the key might be held? I'd like to go back to my IT team with more specific guidance, as they may not be fully aware of where BitLocker recovery information is retained in their own tenancy. For example:

Is there a specific admin portal or section within Microsoft Entra ID where they can search for recovery keys using the Recovery Key ID?

Would the key typically be stored against the device object, the user object, or elsewhere?

I've attached a screenshot of the error message for your reference. Please let me know if you need any further details.

For now, I've made a point of not formatting, initialising, or repartitioning the drive, as I understand that would make file recovery even more difficult.

This is likely due to your school PC applied its Bitlocker policy to the external drive. Organizations can configure Windows so that removable drive must be protected by bitlocker before they can be written to. Such configuration is rolled out by the organization's IT / admin user. This explains why it happened when you didn't do anything.

Sign into this URL with your school account, and see if you can find the recovery key there. https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey

If not, you need to reach out to your school's IT support department. Only they can help you in this case. Microsoft doesn't manage organization's internal user/policy directly. Microsoft is there to support the admin users, but each organization's internal users are supported by their own admin user.

Yes. There are specific places your school's IT team should check, and the recovery information is normally tied to the device/computer object, not the user object itself. I will be very surprised if they don't know where to look.

But just in case..

For Microsoft Entra ID, an admin can go to (Only admin can access, you cannot)

https://entra.microsoft.com > Entra ID > Devices > All devices > select the affected Windows device > BitLocker keys / Show Recovery Key.

If the school manages the device with Intune, they should also check:

https://intune.microsoft.com > Devices > All devices > select the computer > Monitor > Recovery keys > Show Recovery Key.

If the school uses on-prem AD, they can check
Active Directory Users and Computers > locate the computer object > Properties > BitLocker Recovery.

Hopefully that covers some of the common places to look for the admin user.
