How to add Outlook to GMail on my Android phone?

I run Windows 11 Pro on a Dell Inspiron laptop. I recently reset my Android 12 phone, and I cannot add Outlook back to GMail. Every time I try to add Outlook, I get an "Unable to authenticate". I follow the instructions, but I get an authentication message every time. Am I missing something, or is there something wrong with my account?

    Hi Roger Blair,

Since Gmail is automatically redirecting your Hotmail address to the"Outlook, Hotmail, and Live" sign-in option and the manual setup process does not complete, this may indicate that the authentication request is not being accepted during the initial account verification stage.

As a quick check, please try the following:

    1. Sign in to your Hotmail account using a web browser at Outlook.com.
    2. Review the Recent activity page for any pending security verification requests or blocked sign-in attempts.
    3. If prompted, complete any account verification steps and then try adding the account to Gmail again.

If the account signs in normally through the browser but Gmail continues to reject authentication, testing the same account in the Outlook for Android app can help determine whether the issue is specific to the Gmail app's connection process.

Please let me know whether you're able to access the account successfully through the web browser and if you notice any security alerts on the account. That information may help narrow down the cause.

I hope this helps point you in the right direction, and I look forward to your update. Feel free to ask me by clicking "Add Comment" or "Add Answer" if you cannot add comment so your response will be visible. Thanks for your effort.

To add an Outlook.com account to the Gmail app on Android and avoid calendar/contact sync problems, use Exchange and Microsoft 365 in Gmail, not Outlook, Hotmail, and Live.

    Steps:

    1. Update the Gmail app from Google Play if an update is available.
    2. Open Gmail.
    3. Go to Menu > Settings > Add account > Exchange and Microsoft 365.
    4. Enter the full Outlook email address and tap Next.
    5. Enter the password and tap Next.
    6. Follow any prompts for security or device permissions.
    7. If an email appears in the new inbox saying Action Required to Sync Email, open it and tap Use another Mail app instead.
    8. If Android shows Unable to sync calendar and contacts, tap the notification and then tap Allow.

If Unable to authenticate continues, try manual setup in Gmail:

    1. Open Gmail > Settings > Add account > Other.
    2. Enter the full Outlook email address.
    3. Tap Manual Setup > Exchange.
    4. Enter the password.
    5. Use these settings for an Outlook.com account:
      • Server: eas.outlook.com
      • Port: 443 or 993
      • Security type: SSL/TLS
    6. For outgoing mail:
      • SMTP Server: smtp-mail.outlook.com
      • Security Type: TLS
      • Port Number: 587

If the account is a Microsoft 365 work or school account instead of a personal Outlook.com account, the server is outlook.office365.com and extra security prompts may appear.

If the account still fails in Gmail, adding the account in Outlook for Android is another supported setup path:

    1. Open Outlook for Android.
    2. Go to Menu > Settings > Account > Add Account.
    3. Select Add an email account.
    4. Enter the email address and complete authentication.
