Using the New Outlook for Mac features in business environments
For a work Outlook/Exchange account on an iMac, the most common causes are that Outlook is set to Work Offline, the Mac is not connected to the network, the Exchange server connection is failing, the account settings are incorrect, or the account has been disabled by the Exchange administrator.
Try these steps in order:
- In Outlook for Mac, open the Outlook menu and make sure Work Offline is not checked.
- Check that the iMac is connected to the Internet or local network by opening websites in a browser.
- In Outlook for Mac, go to Tools > Accounts and select the Exchange account.
- If the connection indicator is orange, there is a connection problem.
- In the same Accounts window, verify the account settings and credentials are correct.
- Try signing in to the same mailbox from Outlook on the web. If that works, the mailbox itself is available and the issue is likely with Outlook for Mac configuration or connection.
- If Outlook was connected before but now is not syncing, empty the cache for the affected Exchange folder:
- Make sure the Mac is connected to the Exchange server.
- In the navigation pane, Ctrl+click or right-click the Exchange folder.
- Select Properties > General > Empty Cache.
- Caution: this deletes any information not synchronized with the Exchange server, including contacts' mail certificates. Back up Outlook information first if needed.
- If the account requires an encrypted channel, in Tools > Accounts > select the account > Directory, add/select the directory server, and turn on Use SSL to connect (recommended).
- If the account shows as disabled, contact the Microsoft Exchange administrator for the company account.
If the company uses an older Exchange environment, Outlook for Mac supports Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 2 or later, or Microsoft 365 for business.
