    Hi,

The option you are using is the correct setting in classic Outlook. After selecting it and clicking OK, Outlook should normally retain that choice. This is separate from whether a recipient chooses to return the receipt.

    Please try this test:

    1. Go to File > Options > General.
    2. Clear Store my Outlook settings in the cloud, click OK, and restart Outlook.
    3. Go to File > Options > Mail > Tracking.
    4. Select Read receipt confirming the recipient viewed the message, click OK, and restart Outlook again.

Disabling the cloud option keeps subsequent Outlook option changes local to this computer. Microsoft documents that most settings under File > Options can otherwise roam between Outlook for Windows clients: Information about Store my Outlook settings in the cloud | Microsoft Support

If this is a company-managed computer, please also ask your IT administrator whether an Office Group Policy or Microsoft 365 Apps Cloud Policy is controlling Outlook’s tracking settings. A managed policy can reapply settings, so a locally selected option may not remain in place.

If the setting is still cleared afterward, please provide:

    • Your Outlook version and build from File > Office Account > About Outlook.
    • Whether it resets immediately after restarting Outlook or only the following day.
    • Whether the same account is used in Outlook on another Windows computer.
    • The account type shown under File > Account Settings > Account Settings, such as Microsoft 365, Exchange, IMAP, or POP.
    • Whether any other Outlook options are also being reset.

For reference, Microsoft’s documented read-receipt settings are available here: Add and request read receipts and delivery notifications in Outlook | Microsoft Support
