Since the PC is online, the most useful next steps are:
- On the Windows sign-in screen, select Sign-in options and choose the password option instead of the PIN. PIN and biometric options can be unavailable or out of sync in some recovery scenarios.
- If the password was changed for a work or school account, and the lock screen Forgot password flow only spins and then says try again later, the password reset path may be controlled by the organization. In that case:
- If the reset page says Please contact your administrator, the password is managed by the organization and must be reset through the administrator/contact-admin path.
- If it says We couldn't verify your account, either security info was not registered for self-service reset, or password reset is not enabled for the organization.
- If repeated sign-in attempts were made, wait before trying again. Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication can temporarily block more attempts after unusual or repeated sign-ins. If another MFA method is available, use that method.
- Try Safe Mode with Networking to rule out a Windows sign-in issue:
- On the sign-in screen, select Power > Restart.
- When the sign-in screen is visible, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.
- Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After restart, select 5 or press F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
- In Safe Mode, try signing in with the password.
- If there is another account on the device, try signing in with that account from the lower-left account list or choose Other user. If successful, check for Windows updates and review the existing accounts.
- If the device still will not accept the password, use the Microsoft account sign-in helper from another device to identify the account issue.
If this is an organization-managed work account and there is no IT staff, the remaining supported path is the organization administrator/contact-admin route for password reset and account verification.
