No reason seems available, just says disabled. Assuming it is a billing issue, but no path to resolve and MS support has not responded. Production sites are down, looking for a solution. Any ideas.

    Hello @Scott E. Schroyer

Thank you for your contacting, Microsoft Q&A Support team.

If the subscription is showing as Disabled and no specific reason is displayed, it is commonly related to a billing, credit, or compliance issue.

    We recommend the following checks:

    • Sign in to the Azure portal and review the subscription status under Subscriptions.

    • Verify whether there are any outstanding invoices, failed payments, spending limits, or expired credits associated with the subscription.

    • Review any recent emails from Microsoft regarding account actions, billing issues, or policy violations.

Since your production sites are currently impacted, we recommend contacting Azure Subscription and Billing Support as soon as possible. If you are unable to create a support request from the Azure portal, you can use the Microsoft Support contact page and select Billing or Subscription Management as the issue category.

If the subscription shows Disabled, the fastest path depends on the cause:

    1. In Azure portal, go to Subscriptions and open the affected subscription.
      • If there is a banner about non-payment, select it.
      • If the message says “This subscription is disabled because payment wasn’t received. Settle outstanding charges.”, use Settle Balance.
      • If it says “This subscription will be disabled for non-payment. Settle outstanding charges.”, the subscription is still active but has a past-due invoice pending.
    2. Check whether the subscription is disabled because of one of these common billing causes:
      • Past due bill
      • Credit card limit exceeded
      • Credit expired on a free account
      • Spending limit reached on credit-based subscriptions such as Free Trial or Visual Studio Enterprise
      • Canceled subscription
    3. If the issue is a past due balance:
      • Select the portal banner to go to Settle Balance.
      • If payment was already processed but the subscription is still disabled, contact Azure support.
      • Reactivation can take up to 24 hours after payment.
    4. If the issue is a credit card limit problem:
      • Switch to a different credit card, or if representing a business, switch to pay by invoice.
    5. If the issue is a free trial credit expiration:
      • Upgrade the subscription to continue using Azure services.
    6. If the issue is a spending limit:
      • Remove the spending limit in the Azure portal.
      • For a disabled free account that is upgraded, resources are enabled after upgrade and charges can apply for non-free usage.
    7. If the subscription was canceled and the account is the Account Administrator or subscription Owner:
      • Sign in to the Azure portal.
      • Go to Subscriptions.
      • Select the canceled subscription.
      • Select Reactivate.
    8. After reactivation:
      • Most resources resume automatically.
      • There can be a delay in creating or managing resources.
      • If the delay is more than 30 minutes after reactivation, contact Azure Billing Support.
      • Check services and restart them if necessary.
    9. If the subscription was disabled for security reasons or suspicious activity, create a support request for Subscription management / Re-enable my subscription. That path is the documented route in similar Azure cases.
    10. If the subscription remains disabled and no billing path is visible:
    • Verify the correct Azure directory is selected in the portal.
    • If the portal shows No subscriptions found, the account may be in the wrong directory or missing permissions.

A disabled subscription stops create/update/action operations, and services can go offline. Existing resources can generally still be retrieved or deleted while the subscription is disabled.
