Using Outlook for Android in educational settings for communication and organization
Since the accounts open normally on PC and laptop, the issue is likely with the Android sign-in flow in the app rather than the accounts themselves.
Try this order:
- Update the Android sign-in components
- Open Google Play Store.
- Update Microsoft Outlook to the latest version.
- Also update Android System WebView and Google Chrome.
- Restart the phone after updating.
- If recurring password prompts or sign-in problems started recently, installing the latest Outlook version can resolve issues caused by updated security standards.
- Check whether the account itself can still sign in
- For a Microsoft personal account, use the Microsoft sign-in helper tool: Start.
- For a work or school account, use Reset password if self-service password reset is allowed; otherwise contact the IT admin.
- For the Gmail account added to Outlook, sign-in issues must be handled by that email provider.
- If Outlook for Android still shows a white screen, try the Android mail app instead
- In the Gmail app, go to Settings > Add account.
- Choose Outlook, Hotmail, and Live for Outlook.com accounts, or use manual setup for Exchange-based accounts.
- For manual setup in Gmail: Settings > Add account > Other > enter the full email address > Manual Setup > Exchange.
- Use these server settings if needed:
- Outlook.com accounts: eas.outlook.com
- Microsoft 365 work or school accounts: outlook.office365.com
- Port: 443 or 993
- Security type: SSL/TLS
- SMTP for Outlook.com: smtp-mail.outlook.com
- SMTP for Microsoft 365 business: smtp.office365.com
- SMTP port: 587 with TLS
- If prompted to choose an account type, do not use IMAP if Exchange is available. Adding the account as IMAP can prevent proper calendar and contacts sync.
- If the .edu account is a delegated or shared mailbox
- In Outlook mobile, open the sidebar and tap Add Account > Add Shared mailbox.
- Enter the mailbox alias that was granted access.
- If the app is being blocked by Android background restrictions
- Turn off power-saving mode.
- Disable power optimization for Authenticator or Company Portal if those apps are used by the school account.
- Open Authenticator/Company Portal before opening Outlook.
- On some Huawei devices, the setting is in Phone Manager > Auto-launch > Secondary launch management > enable Authenticator/Company Portal.
About the QR code: no QR-code setup path for adding Outlook accounts on Android is described in the available Outlook mobile setup guidance. The supported setup flow is to add the account from the Outlook app or Android mail app using the email address and sign-in prompt.
If the white screen continues after updating Outlook, Android System WebView, and Chrome, the most practical workaround is to add the account in the Gmail app or the built-in Android mail app instead of Outlook for Android.
- Can't sign in to the Outlook mobile app
- Add your Outlook.com account to another mail app or smart device
- Set up email in Android email app
- Failed to add Microsoft 365 account or cannot sync new messages with your existing Microsoft 365 account?
- I am a delegate. How do I add that mailbox to my mobile device?
