We are requesting assistance with an Outlook Mobile sign-in issue affecting a single Microsoft 365 user.

The user is unable to sign into the Outlook application on an iPad. During the sign-in process, Outlook enters an authentication loop several times before ultimately displaying a message indicating that the username/email address cannot be found.

Notably, the issue appears isolated to the Outlook mobile application on the iPad. The same account works successfully through other Microsoft services and applications on the same device.

Troubleshooting Performed

Initial Outlook App Remediation

We performed the following steps:

  1. Removed the Outlook app completely.
  2. Restarted the iPad.
  3. Reinstalled Outlook from the App Store.
  4. Attempted sign-in again.

Result:

  • Issue persisted.

Web Access Validation

We tested access via:

Result:

  • User successfully authenticated and accessed mailbox.

Native iOS Mail Testing

We configured the account using the native iOS Mail application with Exchange selected.

Result:

  • Mail configuration completed successfully.

Credential and Cache Removal

We instructed the user to:

  • Remove all accounts from Outlook.
  • Remove saved Microsoft credentials from iOS Passwords.
  • Restart the device.
  • Reinstall Outlook.
  • Manually enter the email address instead of using autofill.

Result:

  • Issue persisted.

Device Count Verification

We confirmed:

  • User utilizes approximately three devices (phone, iPad, laptop).
  • No apparent mobile app limit issue.

Teams Mobile Authentication Test

To determine whether the issue was Outlook-specific, we tested Microsoft Teams on the same iPad.

Result:

  • User successfully signed into Teams.
  • Teams successfully completed MFA.
  • Outlook continued to fail afterward.

Tenant and Identity Review

We reviewed the account within Microsoft Entra ID and found:

  • User account is healthy and enabled.
  • Account type is Member.
  • Correct UPN/sign-in identifier is configured.
  • No alternate login IDs are present.
  • Appropriate licenses are assigned.
  • Tenant ID presented in the error matches the correct Rising Point tenant.

Based on our review, this does not appear to be:

  • A licensing issue.
  • An account-disabled issue.
  • A wrong-tenant issue.
  • An MFA configuration issue.

Sign-In Log Findings

During investigation of Entra sign-in logs, we observed:

  • Outlook Mobile failures are immediately preceded by successful sign-ins from Microsoft Authentication Broker.
  • The authentication failure occurs before password validation or MFA.
  • Failure presents as an AADSTS50020 scenario.
  • Authentication requirement shows Single-Factor Authentication.
  • Conditional Access is not applied during the failure.
  • Teams and Outlook Web authenticate successfully and complete MFA on the same device.

    Hi @e78 support

Since the user can successfully access Outlook in Safari, their account itself appears to be working. This points more toward a cached authentication issue in the Outlook app or the Office identity on the iPad, rather than an issue with the Microsoft account.

As you have already reinstalled Outlook, restarted the iPad, removed saved credentials, and manually entered the email address, I recommend trying the following:

    • Open another Microsoft 365 app on the iPad, such as Word, Excel.
    • Sign in using the same Microsoft 365 account.
    • Complete MFA if prompted.
    • Leave the account signed in.
    • Open Outlook and try signing in again.

This can refresh the shared Microsoft 365 authentication state on the iPad before Outlook attempts to authenticate again.

Go to iPad Settings > General > VPN & Device Management > check whether the Microsoft account is present under any account-management section on the device. If the iPad was previously registered with another Microsoft 365 organization, or has an old management/registration profile, that would be worth investigating because Outlook Mobile may be obtaining a different account context through the broker than Teams or OWA.

On the same iPad, open Outlook and sign in with another user from the same tenant.

-If the second user works, the issue is likely specific to the affected user's identity/account context.

-If the second user also fails with AADSTS50020, the issue is more likely related to the iPad, Outlook Mobile, Microsoft Authentication Broker, or the tenant authentication configuration.

Likewise, testing the affected user on another iPadOS device would help separate the two possibilities.

Please follow these suggestions and let me know how it goes.
