Problems signing in with an institutional account on a computer

My institutional Microsoft Teams account works correctly on my phone and tablet. However, when I try to sign in on my computer, I receive the following message: "Device management could not be enabled. The account was not configured on this device because device management could not be enabled. This device may not be able to access some resources." The message also indicates that the mobile device management server does not support this platform.

Why can I sign in successfully on my mobile devices but not on my computer, and how can I resolve this issue so that I can access my institutional Microsoft Teams account on my PC?

    Hi @Anderson Holly

Could you first confirm whether you also see the following server message in the error?

“The Mobile Device Management (MDM) server doesn't support this platform or version, consider upgrading your device.”

If you see this message, it does not necessarily mean that the institution's MDM server does not support all devices. In many cases, the wording"this platform or version" refers to the platform involved in the current enrollment attempt, which appears to be the Windows PC. Since your institutional Teams account works on your phone and tablet, those devices may be using platforms or enrollment methods that are supported by the institution's MDM configuration.

    Please provide:

    • Windows edition, version, and OS build: Settings > System > About.
    • Whether your institutional account is currently listed under Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.

If this is a personal PC, you can try the following:

    • Go to Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.
    • If the institutional account is listed, select it and choose Disconnect.
    • Restart the PC.
    • Open Microsoft Teams and sign in again.
    • If Windows asks whether you want to allow the organization to manage the device, choose “No, sign in to this app only" if that option is available.

This prevents Windows from attempting to enroll the personal PC into the institution's MDM/Intune system when device management is not required for simply using Teams.

However, if the institution requires Windows devices to be managed, do not bypass the enrollment requirement. In that case, the institution's IT administrator would need to check whether Windows MDM enrollment is enabled for your account/device and whether personally owned Windows PCs are permitted.

If you're unsure who your IT administrator is, please refer to How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support

    I hope this helps.
