It started happening on 8/05 and it hasn't stopped i tried leaving it alone, doing the diagnostic thing and on safe mode it does not freeze.

    Hi John Law,

Thank you for providing those details. Since the laptop remains stable in Safe Mode but freezes after a few minutes during normal startup, that can sometimes indicate an issue with a startup program, service, driver or a recent Windows update.

Have you had a chance to try the suggestions provided in the AI Answer? If so, please let me know how it went and whether you've noticed any changes in the freezing behavior.

Could you also let me know which version of Windows is installed? To check, press Windows + R, type winver and share a screenshot of the window that appears.

In addition, do you recall whether any Windows updates, driver updates or new software were installed shortly before the issue started on 8/05? Since Safe Mode is working, it would also be helpful to know whether the laptop can remain running there for an extended period without freezing.

I look forward to your update.

Since Safe Mode does not freeze, the issue is likely related to a driver, startup item, service, or app that does not load in Safe Mode.

    1. Force a restart when the system freezes.
      • Press and hold the power button until the laptop shuts down and restarts.
    2. Identify the freeze pattern.
      • Check what is happening when it freezes:
        • during startup
        • after signing in
        • when opening a specific app
        • at a repeated time interval
      • Also confirm whether it affects only this laptop or multiple devices.
    3. Use a clean startup approach.
      • Because Safe Mode works, test whether the freeze is caused by background software or services.
      • Open msconfig.
      • On the Services tab, hide Microsoft services, then disable the remaining non-Microsoft services.
      • Restart and test.
      • If the freezing stops, re-enable items gradually to find the cause.
    4. Check Event Viewer around the exact freeze time.
      • Open Event Viewer.
      • Go to Windows Logs > System.
      • Look for repeated Critical or Error events at the times the laptop freezes.
    5. Make sure Windows is fully updated.
      • Go to Settings > Windows Update and install the latest updates.
    6. If the system still freezes, collect diagnostic data for deeper troubleshooting.
      • Set the system to create a Complete Memory Dump:
        • Run Sysdm.cpl
        • Go to Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced
        • Select Change and verify the paging file
        • Go back to System Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings
        • In Write Debugging Information, select Complete Memory Dump
        • Select Overwrite any existing file
      • Make sure pagefile.sys is on the system drive and is at least 100 MB larger than installed RAM.
      • Make sure the system drive has more free space than the amount of physical RAM.
    7. If needed, enable manual dump capture.
      • Warning: registry changes can cause serious problems if done incorrectly.
      • In Registry Editor, create CrashOnCtrlScroll as REG_DWORD with value 1 in both:
        • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters
        • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\kbdhid\Parameters
      • Restart the laptop.
      • When the freeze happens, hold the right Ctrl key and press Scroll Lock twice.
      • The dump file is normally saved to %SystemRoot%\MEMORY.DMP.

If the laptop is on Windows 8.1 and the freezes started after an upgrade from Windows 8, one known cause is high CPU usage from SDCLT.exe. In that case, install update 2919355. As a workaround, open Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > WindowsBackup, right-click ConfigNotification, and select Disable.
