If a Windows laptop is lost or stolen, it may be possible to locate it using Microsoft’s Find my device feature. This feature must have been enabled before the device was lost, and the laptop must be signed in with a Microsoft account that has administrator privileges on the device. Location services must also be enabled.

To check the device:

Sign in to Microsoft account devices.

Open Find My Device.

Select the missing laptop.

If the device is available, its location will be displayed on a map.

If the device is located, you can also attempt to lock it remotely by selecting Lock and following the instructions. After securing the device, it is recommended to change the password of the associated Microsoft account, particularly if there is any concern that the account may have been compromised.

Important considerations

The feature is available for Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices.

Find my device must have been enabled before the device was lost or stolen.

The device must be connected to the internet and have location services enabled for its location to be reported.

If the device is shared, only an administrator account on the device can use the feature.

A notification may be displayed on the device when a location request is made.

Find my device is not intended for locating iOS, Android, or Xbox devices.

Work or school accounts

If the laptop is managed with a work or school account, the consumer Microsoft account Find my device feature is not the appropriate method for tracking the device.

In this case, the device should be managed through Microsoft Entra ID and the organization’s device management solution, such as Microsoft Intune. Administrators can use the relevant Entra ID and Intune device information to check the device, its registration state and, where supported, take appropriate management actions.

Enabling Find my device for future use

For personal Microsoft accounts, Find my device can be enabled in Windows:

Windows 11: Settings → Privacy & security → Find my device

Windows 10: Settings → Update & Security → Find my device

If there is any indication that the Microsoft account may also have been compromised, review the account’s recent sign-in activity and use Microsoft’s account recovery and security options as appropriate.

To track a stolen Windows laptop with a Microsoft account, Find my device must already have been turned on before it was lost, the laptop must be signed in with a Microsoft account, the account must be an administrator on that device, and location must be enabled.

Steps:

Sign in to https://account.microsoft.com/devices.
Select the Find My Device tab.
Choose the laptop.
Select Find to view its location on a map.

If the laptop appears on the map, it can also be locked remotely:

Select Lock.
Select Next.
After locking it, reset the Microsoft account password for added security.

Important details:

This works for Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices.
It must have been enabled before the laptop was stolen.
It does not work with a work or school account.
It does not work for iOS, Android, or Xbox One devices.
Users on the device will see a notification when a locate attempt is made.
If the device is shared, only an administrator account on that device can locate it.

To turn on Find my device on a Windows laptop for future protection:

Windows 11: Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Find my device
Windows 10: Start > Settings > Update & Security > Find my device

If there is concern that the Microsoft account was also compromised, use the account recovery/sign-in help tools and review recent sign-in activity.
