I have a ASUS Vivobook laptop. I have an toexternal cd/dvd drive connected to the laptop. I put a data disc in the drive and the laptop does not recognize the drive. What steps do I need to take to get this fixed?

Unplug the external drive and plug it into a different USB port, ideally directly on the laptop rather than through a hub or dock. Try a different USB cable if the drive uses a separate one. Loose or hub-routed connections are the most common cause of drives not being detected.

Right-click Start > Device Manager, then look under 'DVD/CD-ROM drives'. If it's missing entirely, check under 'Other devices' or 'Universal Serial Bus controllers' for anything with a yellow warning triangle. If it's not listed anywhere, Windows isn't seeing the hardware at all, which points to a power, cable, or driver issue rather than the disc.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Check the physical connection.
      • Disconnect and reconnect the external CD/DVD drive.
      • Try a different USB port.
      • If available, try a different USB cable. A similar case was resolved by replacing the cabling.
    2. Check whether Windows detects the drive in Device Manager.
      • Press the Windows key, type Device Manager, and press Enter.
      • Look under DVD/CD-ROM drives.
      • If the drive is missing, continue with the next steps.
      • If there is a yellow warning icon, uninstall and reinstall the device driver.
    3. Reinstall the CD/DVD device driver.
      • In Device Manager, expand DVD/CD-ROM drives.
      • Right-click the CD/DVD device and select Uninstall device.
      • Confirm with Uninstall.
      • Restart the laptop.
      • After restart, Windows should automatically reinstall the driver.
    4. Reinstall IDE/ATAPI controllers.
      • In Device Manager, select View > Show Hidden Devices.
      • Expand IDE/ATAPI Controllers.
      • Right-click and uninstall ATA Channel 0, ATA Channel 1, Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller, and any additional entries there.
      • Restart the laptop.
      • Windows should automatically reinstall these drivers.
    5. Check BIOS and chipset drivers.
      • Verify that the drive is enabled in BIOS.
      • Check with the laptop manufacturer that chipset drivers are current.
    6. If the drive still is not recognized, remove corrupted registry filter entries.
      • Warning: incorrect registry changes can cause serious problems.
      • Open Run with Windows key + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
      • Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
      • Delete UpperFilters if present.
      • Delete LowerFilters if present.
      • Restart the laptop.
      • After this, some CD/DVD recording apps may stop working correctly and may need to be reinstalled.
    7. If Windows still does not detect the external drive, test the drive on another computer.
      • If it fails there too, the external drive or cable is likely the problem.
