Microsoft Teams Does Not Show a Chat Option

The Chat feature is not available in Microsoft Teams, which prevents me from communicating and collaborating with my classmates in real time.

When I view the chat area, I only see a gray message stating "This chat is disabled." I'm not sure whether the chat feature has been hidden, disabled by an administrator, or if I do not have the required permissions to use it.

Could you please explain the possible causes of this issue and provide detailed steps to enable or restore access to the Chat feature in Teams?

    • Chatting with someone directly (1:1 or group chat in Teams), or
    • Chat during a Teams meeting (the meeting chat panel)?
    • Are you using Teams desktop or Teams web?

    The message "This chat is disabled" can occur for several reasons:

    • Your school's IT administrator may have disabled Teams Chat for students through a messaging policy.
    • If the issue only occurs during meetings, meeting chat may be disabled by the organizer or administrator.
