Warranty downgraded

I purchased a Surface Laptop Studio in March 2022 together with 4-year Microsoft Complete, including accidental damage cover.

The laptop subsequently developed serious operating problems and was replaced by Microsoft. This was not an accidental-damage claim; the machine was replaced because of recurring operating errors. The replacement itself then developed similar problems and was replaced again.

I have now discovered that the replacement machine appears to have been given only a basic warranty rather than the Microsoft Complete cover I originally purchased.

My understanding is that an in-warranty replacement should retain the remainder of the original warranty/protection plan, rather than the replacement causing the protection I paid for to disappear.

I have tried calling Microsoft to get this resolved, but I am directed back to the Microsoft website. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find any route through the website to speak to someone who can actually review the issue; it seems to be a dead end.

How can I speak to someone at Microsoft who can review the history of the original purchase, the replacement devices and the Microsoft Complete cover, and correct the warranty if it was transferred incorrectly?

I have the original purchase receipt, Microsoft Complete documentation and the replacement receipts.

    Hi Guy Hutchins,

I know how confusing it is to see your remaining time of a 4-year Microsoft Complete plan missing after the device was replaced. Based on Microsoft's Surface service documentation, replacement devices generally receive the remainder of the original warranty or 90 days, whichever is longer. The protection plan you purchased shouldn't just simply disappear.

Since Microsoft Q&A is just a user-to-user support forum, right now, the main issue is to find a support channel that can manually review your warranty records and service history. For this, the chat support service is often considered to be more helpful than calling. However, you might need to attempt some workaround to get to where you want:

    1. Visit Contact Us - Microsoft Support > Sign in
    2. Type in your problem > click Get Help to make request
    3. Scroll down and click Contact Support to connect to an agent
    4. Select category and continue > you should be added to a chat queue.
    5. If you don't see a chat option, go through another category (e.g. Billings...)

Note: The support contact team only works at certain times, so if the last window shows that it's unavailable, try opening it again the next day. If you prefer phone support, you can leave a phone number. This way, they can call you and help you.

If the online support flow continues to send you in circles, I would recommend reaching the support team via different path, then request specifically for a Surface support escalation regarding Microsoft Complete coverage. I hope you can get the help you need.
