I own an old Microsoft account. I still know the email address, but I no longer have access to the old phone number used for verification. I have tried the account recovery form several times, but Microsoft cannot verify my information because the account is very old. I need help recovering access.

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

When was the last time you were able to sign in with your Microsoft account successfully?

    Note -

"If you haven't signed in with your account for more than 2 years, you cannot use the Account Recovery Form here to recover your account. "

Microsoft takes account security very seriously, that's why Account Recovery is an automated process with no human influence. If you don't have the correct information, you may not be able to get through account verification using the Recovery Form. You'll need to keep trying until you're verified by Microsoft.

It's important to note that Microsoft Support will not be able to grant you access to your account, you will be sent back to the Account Recovery pages.

If your Microsoft account recovery request was not granted or was unsuccessful, please click the attached link for more information:

The supported recovery paths are limited to Microsoft’s account recovery and security-info replacement flows.

    1. First, confirm the sign-in name is exactly correct.
      • Check the domain carefully, such as .com vs .co.uk.
      • Check for spelling differences in the account name.
      • If another alias or phone number was added to the account, try that instead.
    2. If the password is known but the old verification phone is no longer available:
      • Start sign-in to the Microsoft account.
      • At Verify your identity, select I don't have any of these.
      • Follow the prompts to replace the security info.
      • After replacing all security info, there is a 30-day wait before sign-in is allowed.
      • If the old security info is found during that 30 days, it can still be used to sign in, but doing so cancels the update.
    3. If the password is not known, or the account still cannot be verified:
      • Use the Sign-in Helper first.
      • Then submit the Microsoft account recovery form again.
      • Complete it from a device previously used to sign in and from a familiar location such as home or office.
      • Provide as much detail as possible. Wrong guesses do not count against the request.
      • For old Outlook.com/Hotmail.com accounts, exact email subject lines and contact details can help.
      • For Skype-linked accounts, Skype ID, contacts, and recent purchase details can help.
      • Old passwords used on the account can also help.
    4. After submitting the recovery form:
      • A result is sent to the working email address entered on the form within 24 hours.
      • If verification fails, the form can be retried up to two times per day.
    5. If two-step verification was enabled and none of the alternate verification methods are accessible:
      • There is no support-assisted bypass.
      • Support agents cannot send password reset links or change account details.

A working email address is required for the recovery process. It is used only to send updates about the recovery request.
