BitLocker recovery key missing despite Microsoft account backup

I'm hoping someone can explain this behaviour or suggest the next step.

I have a Windows 11 Home laptop that suffered a hardware (motherboard) failure after approximately three weeks of use. The SSD was removed and connected to another Windows PC for data recovery.

The drive is BitLocker protected and Windows requests the recovery key.

The BitLocker metadata appears to be intact. Running:

returns:

Running:

shows:

The recovery key requested by Windows matches the protector ID above.

The issue is that I have checked every Microsoft account associated with me, including the BitLocker Recovery Keys page and the Devices page, and the required recovery key is not present in any of them.

My questions are:

  1. Does Backup type: Microsoft account backup definitively mean the recovery key was successfully uploaded to Microsoft's servers, or does it only indicate that Windows attempted to back it up?
  2. Is there any way to determine which Microsoft account the recovery key is associated with using the Recovery Key ID?
  3. Has anyone encountered a situation where BitLocker reports a Microsoft account backup, but the recovery key is not visible in the corresponding account?
  4. Are there any additional diagnostic commands or logs that might help determine what happened?

I'm not looking for a way to bypass BitLocker or recover the key without authorization. I'm trying to understand why Windows reports that the recovery key was backed up to a Microsoft account when it cannot be located.

Any technical insight would be appreciated.

    Hi HL

Thanks for your answer. That truly sucks especially since the laptop was only 3 weeks old and I didn't even ask for the drive to be encrypted...

    Regards

    Tim

    Dear Tim My,

When BitLocker displays "Microsoft account backup," it indicates that Windows attempted to back up the key to a Microsoft account during the creation of the key protector; however, this does not necessarily guarantee that the upload was successful. Depending on network connectivity or account status, the local metadata may still record "Microsoft account backup" even if the actual backup process failed.

There is no method available to directly determine which Microsoft account is linked to a specific Recovery Key ID. Microsoft's BitLocker Recovery Key portal simply lists the keys stored in an account; if you search by key ID and no matching key exists, nothing will be displayed. Instances where the status shows "Backed up" yet the key cannot be found can occur due to factors such as account switching or organizational tenant settings—issues frequently reported in environments where work and personal accounts coexist.

For further diagnosis, it's helpful to check the type and ID of the protector using manage-bde -protectors -get C: and to examine the event log under Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows → BitLocker-API to see if the success or failure of the backup process is recorded. However, if the key does not exist in your Microsoft account, unfortunately, recovery is impossible, and the only officially provided method is to enter the correct recovery key.

In conclusion, even if "Microsoft account backup" is displayed, there is no guarantee that the key is saved, and there is no way to reverse look up the account from the Recovery Key ID. This is a design specification, and if the key cannot be found, there is no solution other than contacting Microsoft support.
