Additional chat-related features and issues within Microsoft Teams for Education
Hello Wesley Jones,
Thank you for your question. I completely understand why this is frustrating, especially if you're creating a large number of Class Teams each academic year and want student commenting to be restricted by default.
Based on the current behavior of Microsoft Teams for Education, there is no built-in setting to automatically mute students in all newly created Class Teams by default. The "Mute students" setting is currently applied on a per-Class Team basis, which means it needs to be configured individually for each team after it has been created.
As things stand today, the quickest available approach is still to open each Class Team and use the "Mute all students" option, rather than muting students one at a time.
Unfortunately, there isn't currently a tenant-wide setting or default policy that automatically enables this for all future Class Teams.
Personally, I completely agree that it would be very useful to have a setting that allows administrators or educators to define student commenting permissions as a default for newly provisioned Class Teams. If you'd like to help bring visibility to this idea, I'd encourage you to submit feedback through the Microsoft Feedback Portal: Microsoft Teams · Community
The Product Team is responsible for the feedback site and regularly reviews comments and suggestions from customers. Many features and improvements have been implemented over time based on feedback received from users.
After submitting your suggestion, feel free to return here and post the feedback link in this thread. That way, other educators and administrators who come across this discussion can review it and upvote the request, helping to bring more attention to the feature.
Thank you again for raising the question, and I completely understand the challenge of having to repeat the same configuration across multiple teams each year.
Best regards,
