I made a spread sheet for my bank deposits. It automatically enters a dollar sign before each entry. The extra space it uses causes each cell to be wider than necessary. Now the rows won't fit on the page. Don't want to reduce the font to a tiny nonreadable size. I want to make the width of the columns in my spreadsheet fit on one page. What can I do to get rid of the dollar sign? Of course, I will want to continue to be able to add the totals as if it is arithmetic instead of accounting. I tried to backspace to get rid of the offending $, but it won't go.

Change the number format of the cells so they are not using a currency format (which adds the dollar sign and extra spacing).

Steps:

Select the cells (or entire column) that show the dollar sign.
On the Home tab, in the Number group, open the Number Format drop-down (it may currently show Currency or Accounting).
Choose General or Number instead of a currency format.
- This removes the dollar sign but keeps the values as real numbers, so they still add up correctly.
If the cells now show #####, widen the column:
- Double-click the right border of the column header, or
- On Home > Cells group > Format > AutoFit Column Width.

If later a dollar sign is needed only in specific places (for example, totals), apply a currency format just to those cells instead of the whole column.
