A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data.
Change the number format of the cells so they are not using a currency format (which adds the dollar sign and extra spacing).
Steps:
- Select the cells (or entire column) that show the dollar sign.
- On the Home tab, in the Number group, open the Number Format drop-down (it may currently show Currency or Accounting).
- Choose General or Number instead of a currency format.
- This removes the dollar sign but keeps the values as real numbers, so they still add up correctly.
- If the cells now show
#####, widen the column:- Double-click the right border of the column header, or
- On Home > Cells group > Format > AutoFit Column Width.
If later a dollar sign is needed only in specific places (for example, totals), apply a currency format just to those cells instead of the whole column.
