These new Organize contacts using Categories & New contact editor behave so badly.

  1. How can we delete multiple contacts now? Do we have to delete them one by one? That's not very practical.
  2. The new contact editor does not update contacts immediately like the old contact editor did. Please test this with the Graph APIs. Previously, when using Graph APIs, contact updates were reflected instantly, but that doesn't appear to be happening now. These new Organize contacts using Categories & New contact editor behave so badly.

    Hello @Jeff Warren,

Thank you for providing this update.

Based on your description, this issue appears to be more related to the Outlook user interface itself.

To better understand the situation, could you please help capture and share a screenshot of the Home tab in Outlook? I’d like to check whether the Delete button is visible there.

If the Delete button is not showing, you can also try using the alternative methods below to remove the email:

    • Press the Delete key on your keyboard
    • Or use the shortcut Ctrl + D

If the issue still continues, may I ask whether you are using the New Outlook for Windows or Outlook on the web or both?

For Outlook on a Windows device, you may try resetting the Outlook app to clear any cached data and then test the behavior again afterward.

    • Press Windows + I to open the Settings app.
    • Click on Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features, depending on your Windows version).
    • Scroll down or search for Outlook for Windows > Click on the three dots > Advanced options

    User's image

    • Scroll down to the Reset section > Choose Repair

    User's image

    • Restart your PC
    • Open New Outlook again and test the behavior

For Outlook on the web, you can try checking whether the issue occurs in another browser, or test using Incognito/InPrivate mode by pressing Ctrl + Shift + N. This can help determine whether the issue is related to browser cache or extensions.

Please also let me know the result after trying these steps.

I understand how inconvenient this kind of issue can be, and I truly appreciate your patience and cooperation while we investigate further. I look forward to your update so I can continue assisting you.

    Hello @Jeff Warren,

Thank you for sharing your question. I understand how these behaviors can be confusing with the updated experience.

Regarding deleting multiple contacts in the updated experience:

Multi-select is still supported, but the interaction may vary slightly.

    • You can select contacts one by one using the checkboxes, or choose to select all contacts and then unselect the ones you want to keep before clicking Delete.
    • If you want to select a large group at once, you can use Shift + click to select a range of contacts (on Windows), or the Command + click on macOS, and then delete them together.

Please note that the checkbox may not appear immediately when you open the People app. You may need to hover over a contact first for the checkbox to become visible.

For the Microsoft Graph API behavior:

Since the delayed update you’re seeing may be related to backend synchronization or service-side changes, the best next step is to contact Microsoft Support. They have access to tenant-level diagnostics and can confirm whether this is expected behavior or something that needs further investigation, and can escalate if needed.

For business support: Please ask your organization's Global Admin for assistance of creating a support request.

    • Find your Microsoft 365 admin: If you don't know who the global admin is in your organization, you can find guidance here: How can I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support
    • Submit a service request: The Global Administrator should create a support request with Microsoft to receive advanced technical assistance. For detailed instructions, see: Get support - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn
    • If your organization's subscription is from a partner or reseller, and the global administrator is unable to open a service request on your end, contact the reseller's support provider to help open a service request on behalf of you instead.

If you discover any solutions or have additional insights, please consider replying to this thread to help others in the community.

I’d like to clarify that as a forum moderator, I do not have access to advanced troubleshooting tools, or contact Microsoft Support on your behalf. Please consider me an end user as well, providing guidance based on experience and documented processes.

If you need further assistance, feel free to reply. I'm here and happy to help!

Thanks again for taking the time to raise this.
