Copilot in Excel can stop answering analysis questions for several common, supported reasons:

    1. File or storage issues
      • Copilot in Excel only works with Excel files (.xlsx, .xlsb, .xlsm) saved to OneDrive or Microsoft 365 SharePoint with AutoSave turned on.
      • If the file is in an unsupported format (for example, Strict Open XML) or stored locally, Copilot may fail and respond that it cannot answer.
      • If the file is checked out in SharePoint, Copilot can show an “Unsupported file state” message and not run analysis. Checking the file back in and reopening it in Excel, or opening it in Excel for the web, is required.
    2. Data format issues
      • Copilot’s direct data analysis requires structured data: tables or table-like ranges. Unstructured data is not supported.
      • If the data is not formatted as a table or a clear range with headers, Copilot may not be able to interpret the question and will respond that it cannot answer.
    3. Prompt or language issues
      • Copilot in Excel understands prompts in multiple languages but works best in English. If prompts or data are in languages where Copilot is less effective, it may fail more often.
      • Very vague prompts or prompts that don’t clearly reference the relevant tables/ranges and column headers can also cause Copilot to respond that it can’t answer.
    4. Feature mode and deprecations
      • Some Copilot-related features in Excel (such as App Skills for certain visualizations) are being deprecated and replaced by other modes like Agent Mode, Copilot Chat, or Analyst. If a previous workflow relied on a deprecated path, Copilot may no longer respond as before.

    To restore analysis:

    1. Confirm the workbook is saved as .xlsx/.xlsb/.xlsm in OneDrive or SharePoint with AutoSave on.
    2. If the file is checked out in SharePoint, check it back in and reopen it, or use Excel for the web.
    3. Format the data as a table and ensure clear column headers.
    4. Ask specific questions that reference the table or range and columns explicitly, preferably in English.
    5. If a direct answer is returned but more depth is needed, use the “Get deeper results using advanced analysis mode” suggestion to switch to the advanced analysis (Python) mode.

If all of the above are already satisfied and the issue persists, the next step is to verify that the account and app still meet the Microsoft 365 Copilot requirements and that Copilot is available and enabled in Excel.
