Why are my excel files not saving?

Every time I work on an excel file and save it the changes are not there when I reopen the file. I have tried changing the location, the file name, etc. Nothing works. It is extremely frustrating and wasting a lot of time to redo the work.

    Hi! Let me help you.

Have you tried signing out and signing back in to Excel?

If not, please open a blank Excel sheet, go to File and then Accounts and choose the Sign out option, restart Excel and sign back in, try to create an Excel document and save it to check if it works.

The most common reasons Excel changes are not saved, even though Save appears to succeed, are:

    1. Insufficient permissions on the folder
    • Excel must have Read, Write, Modify, and Delete permissions on the folder where the workbook is saved.
    • If Modify or Delete rights are missing (common on network or shared locations), Excel may:
      • Save changes to a temporary file with a random name (for example, 4CCA4100) instead of the real file name.
      • Leave the original file unchanged, so when the file is reopened, changes are missing.
    • To confirm, try renaming or deleting the file in File Explorer. If that fails, Excel also cannot fully save to that location.
    • Fix: Save to a folder where full rights exist (e.g., Documents on the local drive), or ask the administrator to grant Modify and Delete rights on the target folder.
    1. Network or external drive issues
    • When saving to a network drive or external drive, any interruption (network glitch, drive disconnect) can break Excel’s save sequence.
    • Excel saves by writing to a temporary file in the same folder, deleting the original, then renaming the temporary file.
    • If this process is interrupted, the original file may remain unchanged while a temporary file holds the new content.
    • Fix:
      • Save locally first (e.g., Desktop or Documents), then copy the file to the network or external drive.
      • If a “temporary” file with a random name appears in the folder, open it to see if it contains the latest changes and then save it under a proper name.
    1. Third-party antivirus or add-ins interfering
    • Antivirus software may lock the temporary file for scanning while Excel is trying to rename it, interrupting the save.
    • Third-party Excel add-ins loaded at startup can also interfere with saving.
    • Fix:
      • Temporarily disable antivirus and test saving.
      • Start Excel in Safe Mode (hold Ctrl while starting Excel and choose to start in Safe Mode), then try saving a new file and the problem file. If saving works in Safe Mode, a third‑party add-in or startup file is likely the cause and should be removed or updated.
    1. Disk space or path/name issues
    • If the destination disk is full, Excel cannot complete the save and may show “Disk is Full.”
    • If the full path plus file name exceeds 218 characters, Excel may fail with “Filename is not valid.”
    • Fix:
      • Ensure there is enough free space on the drive.
      • Shorten folder structure and file name so the total path length is well under 218 characters.

    Practical steps to try immediately

    1. Save the workbook to a simple local path, such as C:\Users\<user>\Documents\Test.xlsx, and verify whether changes persist.
    2. In File Explorer, confirm that the file can be renamed and deleted in that folder.
    3. Check the folder for any random-named files (like 4CCA4100) if changes appear missing; open them to see if they contain the latest edits.
    4. If the issue only occurs on a specific network or shared folder, request Modify and Delete rights for that folder.
    5. If the issue started after installing software (especially antivirus or Excel add-ins), test with antivirus temporarily disabled and Excel in Safe Mode.
