[Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed] Email Distribution Group Updates Needed

I am currently listed as an owner of the Outlook [Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed] Distribution group. I need to remove my name and add [Moderator note: Personally Identifiable Information removed] as owner of the group; however, it looks as though I no longer have access to save once I make the change. Could someone look into this for me?

    Hi @Deubel,Lisa

I hope you’re doing well, and thank you for reaching out. I appreciate you sharing the details of your situation.

Before we proceed, please note that this is a user-to-user community forum. As a moderator, I don’t have access to your Microsoft 365 tenant, your account, or your device to make changes directly. However, I’ll do my best to support you by sharing the appropriate resources and directing you to the right support channels.

From what you described, this behavior can happen when the group must be updated through a specific admin interface or when additional administrative permissions are required to save ownership changes. Even if your name appears as an owner, the ability to make and save those changes may still depend on the permissions currently assigned to your account.

To help move this forward, please contact another administrator in your organization (such as a Global Admin, Exchange Admin) and ask them to complete the ownership update through the Exchange Admin Center.

    Steps for admin:

    1. Sign in to the Microsoft Admin center, then open the Exchange admin center.
    2. User's image
    3. Go to Recipients > Groups > Distribution list.
    4. Select the distribution group you want to update.
    5. Open the Members section > View all and manage owners
    6. Select “View all and manage owners,” add the new owner, remove the previous owner if needed
    7. User's image
    8. Save the change and allow a short time for the update to apply.

    For references:

Additionally, if needed, your IT team can also raise a support ticket with Microsoft Support through the Microsoft Admin Center for deeper investigation. They have access to backend configurations and can perform a more in-depth investigation. At the very least, they can provide the most effective workaround to ensure your experience remains smooth and secure.

I hope this information is helpful. Should you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please feel free to share them in the comment below. I'm very happy to help.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Ownership changes for a Microsoft 365/Outlook distribution group must be done by someone who still has owner permissions or by an Exchange/tenant admin.

For a mail-enabled distribution group in Outlook on the web / Microsoft 365:

    1. Go to the “Groups I own” portal for distribution groups:
      • Navigate to the portal referenced under Create and manage distribution groups.
    2. On the Groups I own tab, select the VanGoogle distribution group.
    3. Open the group’s settings (for example, Edit general settings or the Settings tab).
    4. In the Ownership section, add Kelly Scribner as an owner.
    5. Save the changes.

If the current owner can no longer save changes (for example, ownership was removed or permissions changed), an Exchange administrator must update the group:

    1. In the Exchange admin center (EAC), go to Recipients > Groups.
    2. Select the VanGoogle distribution group and choose Edit.
    3. Go to the Ownership section.
    4. Add Kelly Scribner as an owner and, if required, remove the existing owner.
    5. Save the changes.

If neither path works (no owner with save rights), open a ticket with the organization’s IT/Exchange admin team so they can adjust group ownership in the EAC.
