    Hi, OLA Staff

This usually happens when Word and Excel cannot confirm the correct Microsoft account or license, even if the password itself is right. It can also happen when old sign-in details are stuck on the computer, so the apps keep trying to use the wrong saved account.

Here are some suggestions you can try:

First, go to https://account.microsoft.com or https://www.office.com in a web browser and check whether you can sign in there. If you can sign in online, the account is probably okay, and the issue is more likely with the Word/Excel apps on the computer.

Next, open Word or Excel, if it lets you, then go to File > Account. Sign out of every account shown there, close all Office apps, then reopen Word and sign in with the exact account that owns the Microsoft 365 subscription or Office license. It is usually recommended checking that Office is signed in with the right account and that the subscription is active.

If Word or Excel will not open properly, repair Office instead. On Windows, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Microsoft 365 or Office, choose Modify, then try Quick Repair first. If that does not help, run Online Repair.

It is also recommended that you clear old saved Office sign-ins. On Windows, open Credential Manager, choose Windows Credentials, and remove entries related to Office, MicrosoftOffice, ADAL, OneAuth, or Microsoft 365. Then restart the PC and sign in again. It is suggested that removing old saved accounts from Windows Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts or Access work or school can also help when Office keeps using the wrong login.

If none of this works, you can follow the Q&A Assist's flow to contact Microsoft Support, or you can click this link:

To speak with a live Microsoft support person about not being able to access Word or Excel, use one of these options:

    1. Use the Get Help app (Windows)
      1. In the Windows search bar, type Get Help and open the app.
      2. In the text box, type Chat with an agent.
      3. Select Contact support at the bottom.
      4. Choose the product category for Microsoft 365 & Office (Word/Excel).
      5. Follow the prompts and choose Call me back if a phone option is offered.
    2. Use online Microsoft support for home users
      1. Go to the Customer service phone numbers page for Microsoft support: use the Get Help button under Home Users.
      2. Describe the problem (for example, “Cannot open Word or Excel”).
      3. The system will either provide self-help or connect to support via chat or request a call (Microsoft calls back, so no need to wait on hold).
    3. If using Microsoft 365 subscription (Personal/Family/Basic/Premium)
      1. Go to the Microsoft 365 customer service page for home products.
      2. Use Chat or Call back options to reach a technical support expert for Word/Excel access issues.

If the issue is related to sign-in or account problems (for example, can’t sign in to the Microsoft account that owns Word/Excel), use the Microsoft account help pages and, if needed, select I need to talk to a customer support agent to escalate to a person.
