On Android, OneDrive camera backup has two different behaviors:
- Camera Roll (default behavior)
When camera backup is on, photos and videos are uploaded into OneDrive’s Camera Roll and then automatically organized by date (year/month) in the Photos view. This is what is being seen now. - Backing up additional device folders
OneDrive can also back up other folders from the phone (for example, custom gallery folders, social media, editing apps). These can either:- Keep their original folder structure, or
- Be merged into Camera Roll.
To keep the same folder organization as on the phone gallery, ensure the additional folders are backed up as separate folders and not merged into Camera Roll:
- Open the OneDrive app on Android.
- Tap the account image at the top of the app.
- Tap Settings > Camera backup.
- Tap Back up device folders.
- Turn the categorize toggle on if the goal is to keep the original folders.
On: keeps original folders from the device.
Off: sends everything into Camera Roll, where OneDrive organizes by date. - Scroll through the list and select the specific gallery folders (for example,
1995, Snow,2026, Denver,2010, Susanna) to be backed up.
With categorize turned on and the relevant device folders selected, OneDrive backs up those folders so they remain distinguishable instead of being flattened into date-based Camera Roll organization.
Note that in OneDrive’s Photos view, items are still shown primarily by date. To see and work with the folder structure (like 1995, Snow), use the Files view in OneDrive, where folders and names are preserved.
