    1

    Open Word.

At the top right of Word, log out of Office.

Restart (not shut down) your PC, then log back into Office, is your subscription then recognised correctly.

    2

If not, log into your Microsoft account on this link, is your Office licence listed correctly there, or if that is a subscription, check the expiry date listed on your subscription, is that listed correctly.

If not, go to the Payments and Billing section, is it indicated your payment has been processed correctly.

Follow these steps to restore access to documents when Word says a license is required:

    1. Confirm the correct account and subscription
      • Open any Microsoft 365 app (for example, Word) and go to File > Account.
      • Check which email/account is shown under User Information.
      • Make sure this is the same account that owns the Microsoft 365 or Office license.
      • For home use, the account must have an active Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription.
      • For business use, the account must have an active Microsoft 365 Business (Basic/Standard/Premium) or Microsoft 365 E3/E5/F1/F3 subscription.
      • If the wrong account is shown, sign out in the app, then sign in with the account that has the active subscription.
    2. Update or refresh the license in the app
      • In Word, go to File > Account.
      • Select Update License (if available).
      • When prompted, sign in with the account that has the valid subscription.
      • If a Couldn't update license (Error Code: 44) message appears, it means the signed-in account does not have the correct license. Sign out and sign in with the correct account, then try Update License again.
    3. Fix “Unlicensed Product” / activation errors
      • If the title bar shows Unlicensed Product or Non-commercial use / Unlicensed Product, activation has failed.
      • Close all Office apps.
      • On Windows, run Word as administrator to clear permission issues:
        1. Press Start.
        2. Type Word.
        3. Right-click Word and select Run as administrator.
        4. Select Yes when prompted.
      • After Word opens, sign in again with the account that owns the license and let it complete activation.
    4. Check for license verification issues
      • If starting Word shows a message like Microsoft Office cannot verify the license for this product, there may be a Windows licensing/registry issue.
      • In that case, follow the registry steps in the documentation to restore the SoftwareProtectionPlatform registry key and permissions, then restart the device and open Word again.
    5. If Word is tied to an old or invalid account
      • If Word is still asking to sign in with an old work/school account that no longer exists or has no subscription, Word must be reinstalled and activated with a valid account:
        • Uninstall Microsoft 365/Office from Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows) or from Applications (Mac).
        • Remove old work/school accounts from Settings > Accounts > Access work or school (Windows) and clear any cached credentials in Control Panel > Credential Manager.
        • Reinstall Office from the account that has the active subscription and sign in with that account when Word first opens.

Once Word is properly activated with a valid license, documents will open in full editing mode instead of read-only or blocked mode.
